Caesar
Biography
Three-eyed commander of the hunting team
Caesar is a Magus personally nurtured by Four Seasons Garden and serves as deputy commander through his leadership of its hunting team. He has already met the requirements for Rank 2 but deliberately remains a peak Rank 1 Magus, increasing his elemental essence conversion so that his eventual foundation will be stronger. His combat reputation and the vertical eye in his forehead make him one of the organization's most feared field authorities. (Chapters 158, 194, 215–217)
He dislikes Leylin Farlier from the latter's entry into Four Seasons Garden, harassing a Magus he considers inferior in origin. During the Eternal River Plains campaign he brings Leylin into the hunting team, sends him against former Abyssal Bone Forest allies, and tests him directly with Spiritual Eye. Caesar's hostility is real, but he also recognizes strength: after Leylin completes an assignment thought impossible, Caesar cannot deny the required contribution points even while delaying promotion. (Chapters 194, 213–232)
The hidden body inside Four Seasons Garden
The collapse of the secret plane exposes Caesar as the deepest Thousand Meddling Hands infiltrator. He, Giant, and a young boy are three bodies cultivated through Three Spirits in a Body, all connected to the Rank 2 dark Magus Cabourn. Caesar's official position gives the conspiracy intelligence about Four Seasons Garden's defenses and enough authority to manipulate the formation genie. The planned culmination is to raise all three bodies to peak Rank 1, merge them, and use their combined foundation to attempt Rank 2. The boy's premature death leaves that route incomplete. (Chapters 248–250)
With Reynold and other leaders dead, Caesar cooperates with Leylin to preserve their positions and prepare another seizure of the headquarters. He analyzes how to draw Desmund away, helps disable communication and defensive authority, and secretly admits batches of dark Magi into critical areas. His command role becomes the instrument of the second massacre: people who trust Caesar as one of the last peak Rank 1 defenders are surrounded by troops he has placed inside their own formations. (Chapters 249–260)
Caesar takes morbid satisfaction in the destruction, but his alliance with Leylin rests on contracts and mutual necessity rather than trust. They need their combined authority to remove the seal from the secret plane's core consciousness; Caesar tolerates Leylin because neither can complete that step alone. Once Cabourn arrives, the balance disintegrates. Caesar is injured in the fighting, and Leylin abandons the dark Magi after securing his own objectives. (Chapters 249–263)
Failure of the three spirits
Giant and Caesar attempt to oppose Leylin together, speaking in unison as two bodies of the same practitioner, but both are already severely injured. They are rendered unconscious during the final struggle. Leylin's Toxic Bile then spreads indiscriminately through the battlefield, killing the incapacitated bodies along with enemies and allies in the outer region. (Chapters 263–267)
Because the third body was already dead, Caesar and Giant's deaths eliminate all three spirits rather than leaving another vessel for recovery. Caesar's long-delayed Rank 2 plan ends before fusion, and the identity that successfully penetrated Four Seasons Garden becomes one more concealed component of Leylin's larger victory and Ten Thousand Spirit formation. (Chapters 248, 265–269)
Appearance and personality
Caesar's defining feature is the vertical third eye in the center of his brow. It can look almost gentle when his expression is controlled, but emits a furtive radiance when active; stone-like skin spreads outward from it as his condition changes. He presents himself with the assurance of an elite commander and can conceal hostility beneath official courtesy.
He is elitist, vindictive, and skilled at institutional pressure. Caesar enjoys forcing weaker Magi into dangerous positions and possesses a reputation for torture, yet can suppress anger when rules or strategy require it. He is also an effective large-scale planner, able to analyze faction responsibilities and use legitimate command systems to make betrayal appear like routine administration.
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Peak Rank 1 foundation and delayed advancement
Caesar is a peak Rank 1 Magus who met the basic requirements for Rank 2 roughly twenty years before his conflict with Leylin. He suppresses advancement to push elemental essence conversion above the minimum, aiming for greater battle power and smoother future growth. This produces strength above most South Coast Rank 1 Magi and even above some organizational leaders whose professions emphasize research rather than combat. It remains preparation, not achieved Rank 2: the corpus never shows Caesar completing the breakthrough. (Chapters 215–217, 258)
His spiritual force can generate a storm strong enough to distort the surrounding space and overpower Leylin when Leylin is concealing part of his strength. Caesar's rank does not make him comparable to a genuine Rank 2 Magus, however. Cabourn's actions can throw him through ruins, and once heavily injured he cannot survive Leylin's region-wide poison. (Chapters 215–216, 261–267)
Spiritual Eye
Caesar opens his third eye to cast Spiritual Eye, projecting the image of a giant vertical eye behind him and exerting direct spiritual pressure. The technique attacks through spiritual force rather than ordinary vision, and in their official duel it steadily presses through Leylin's resistance. The eye also marks Caesar's specialized perception, although the text does not establish unrestricted mind reading or omniscience. (Chapters 215–216)
The eye's effectiveness depends on the same rank and spiritual-force advantage as Caesar's other magic. It can dominate a suppressed Rank 1 opponent, but provides no demonstrated defense against higher-rank attacks or wide-area poison. The stone-like skin spreading around it later accompanies the damaged Three Spirits state; it should not be treated as a separately mastered transformation without further explanation. (Chapters 248, 261–267)
Three Spirits in a Body
Three Spirits in a Body divides one practitioner's development across Caesar, Giant, and a boy. The bodies can operate in separate factions and identities, letting the same hidden power infiltrate Four Seasons Garden while maintaining overt ties to the dark Magi. Caesar and Giant can synchronize speech and intent, revealing their shared foundation when acting together. (Chapters 248, 263)
The intended progression requires all three bodies to reach peak Rank 1 and then merge for a Rank 2 attempt. This makes the method powerful but fragile: the boy's death prevents the planned completion, and killing Caesar and Giant afterward eliminates the remaining spirits. The method gives strategic multiplicity rather than automatic resurrection; it fails once every vessel is destroyed. (Chapters 248, 263–267)
Formations, command authority, and covert warfare
Caesar is experienced with formations and institutional defenses. He uses an Eight-Clawed Spider silk warning screen sensitive enough to detect Rank 2 eavesdropping, understands the formation genie's permissions, and combines his authority with Leylin's to disable communications, admit troops, and loosen the seal around the core consciousness. Much of this power is positional and installation-derived: he cannot reproduce the headquarters' defenses as an innate spell, and some operations require another authorized Magus. (Chapters 249–259)
As hunting-team leader, he commands trained Magi, allocates zones, assigns missions, and understands how outside organizations will respond to pressure. His torture methods and covert network support that command, but his schemes depend on secrecy, faction backing, and Cabourn's Rank 2 force. Once Leylin controls the information flow and reverses the alliance, Caesar's personal Rank 1 power cannot rescue the operation. (Chapters 158, 194–269)
Relationships
- Leylin Farlier: Temporary associate and concealed opponent whose poison ultimately kills him.
- Desmund: Another major power maneuvered within Leylin's final South Coast plan.
Items
Caesar's most distinctive feature is his innate third eye rather than a carried magical artifact.
