Anna
Biography
From purchased maid to chief aide
Anna is a trained maid purchased for Leylin Farlier's early household. She says that a merchant raised her before selling her to Dylan, and her education includes etiquette, herb identification, simple ingredient preparation, and the service expected of a personal maid. Leylin gives her the name Anna and immediately places the household purse in her care. Her training makes her useful without implying magical aptitude: she explicitly cannot perform experimental work that requires energy particles. (Chapter 53)
In Extreme Night City, Anna becomes much more than a domestic servant. She receives medicine-shop deliveries, organises labelled herbs and common formulas for Leylin's experiments, controls the money used for large purchases, and passes orders between the villa, shop, guards, and hired staff. By the time Leylin prepares to leave, he treats her as the household's chief aide and orders Greem and Fraser to obey her as they would obey him. (Chapters 59–63, 71, 78–79)
Steward of an independent holding
Leylin cannot take ordinary retainers back to the academy, so he gives Anna letters authorising her to manage his Extreme Night City establishments. If he does not return within ten years, the manor and medicinal shop are to become hers, with Murphy and Viscount Jackson serving as witnesses and possible protectors. He also removes the restrictions binding her as a slave and provides an antidote for the Mandara Flower essence left in her body. Anna wants to follow him and initially experiences the order to stay behind through the conditioning of her slave training, but she accepts responsibility for the property and guards. (Chapter 79)
Anna ultimately develops the organisation out to the outskirts of Extreme Night City. She never marries and later dies alone of old age; after her death, the human organisation withers away. This retrospective confirms her long-term competence while also showing the limit Leylin had anticipated: without Magus inheritance or a successor, the holding could not remain durable across generations. (Chapters 680–681)
Appearance and personality
Anna is introduced as a beautiful young woman with extremely pale skin and an exquisite, doll-like face. She is shy in intimate conversation, attentive to etiquette, and diligent with repetitive work. Her loyalty is inseparable from coercive circumstances: earlier treatment leaves her afraid of Magi, and slave training makes disobedience feel painful even after Leylin decides to free her. At the same time, her later stewardship demonstrates competence beyond conditioned obedience; she keeps the holding alive and expands it for the remainder of her life. (Chapters 53, 56–59, 79, 680)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Human limitations
Anna is an ordinary human with no stated aptitude as an acolyte. She cannot manipulate energy particles and therefore cannot perform the magical stages of Leylin's experiments or defend herself from Magi through personal power. Her long life is not established as supernatural, and her final cause of death is ordinary old age. (Chapters 53, 680)
Herb and laboratory assistance
Her education in The Science of All Living Things and Herbs Identification lets her recognise herbs and prepare simple ingredients. In Leylin's laboratory she labels, sorts, and stores large deliveries, provides ordinary pharmacists' formulas, and follows instructions for material acquisition. She supports potioneering logistics but is never shown brewing Magus potions herself. (Chapters 53, 59–62)
Finance and household administration
Anna manages household funds, coordinates servants and guards, supplies the medicine shop, and later holds authority over the entire estate. Her successful expansion of the organisation to Extreme Night City's outskirts shows sustained administrative ability. That achievement depends partly on property, trained Knights, and letters to powerful witnesses left by Leylin, so it is social and institutional competence rather than an unexplained personal power. (Chapters 53, 59–63, 71, 79, 680)
Relationships
- Leylin Farlier: Her master and intimate partner during his Extreme Night City period. He relies on her as his chief aide, later frees her and transfers control of his property, but still frames her future through orders she struggles to disobey. (Chapters 53–79)
- Fraser and Greem: The two Knight retainers who guard Leylin's household. Leylin gives Anna the means to control them and orders them to recognise her authority after his departure. (Chapters 53, 59, 79)
- Dylan: The previous owner to whom Anna had been sold before entering Leylin's household. (Chapter 53)
Items
- Letters of authority: Documents placing Leylin's Extreme Night City establishments under Anna's management and transferring them to her if he remains absent for ten years. (Chapter 79)
- Desert scorpion sting: A control implement for Greem and Fraser that Leylin leaves in Anna's custody. It gives her leverage over the guards but is not an innate ability. (Chapter 79)
- Recovery and attack potions: Leylin gives Anna a healing potion and a purple potion to throw if even the two Knights cannot handle a danger. Their effects come from prepared consumables, and the corpus does not show Anna using them. (Chapter 79)
- Night Hawk feather cap: A customary gift Anna prepares for Leylin's social visit. (Chapters 56–57)
