Alustriel

Biography

Lady of Silverymoon

Alustriel rules Silverymoon and leads its northern alliance as a legendary wizard, Mystra's blood daughter, and one of her Chosen. Her command of the city's formations lets her teleport freely even where another legendary cannot, while her political authority lets her grant hereditary titles and access to Silverymoon's magical learning. She meets Leylin Farlier warmly, approves his barony, and nearly gives away legendary resources until advisers restrain her generosity. The episode establishes both the appeal that wins popular loyalty and the lack of reserve that complicates her statecraft. (Chapters 886–904)

The orc invasion

When the orcs invade, Alustriel refuses to preserve herself behind the command structure and repeatedly joins the wall fighting. She spends divine force through the city's formations on a large-scale enhancement that raises soldiers' morale and fighting ability, then personally contends with Saladin. The spectacle keeps the defence coherent but leaves her pale and expends power needed elsewhere. Silverymoon falls despite her legendary might, demonstrating that one Chosen cannot replace strategy, logistics, and a functioning army. She escapes into concealment and later rebuilds the alliance around New Silverymoon. (Chapters 904–949 and 1134–1151)

Return to the divine war

Mystra's death and the destruction of the Weave remove the system on which Silverymoon's wizard society depends. Alustriel grieves but remains one of the few who can adapt: peak legendary control lets her begin casting independently, and inherited divinity leaves open a possible succession to the Weave. She supports dangerous arcanist research, abandons territory to preserve survivors, and finally cooperates with the orcs against the insect colonies. By the last battles she and Elminster protect the remaining northern human fortresses rather than the realm she once ruled. (Chapters 963–1188)

Appearance and personality

Alustriel has a youthful, approachable manner and laughter compared to a silver bell. She is charismatic, generous, humane, and personally courageous. Her instinct to help individuals makes her inspiring but less effective at detached statecraft.

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Legendary wizardry

Alustriel is a peak legendary wizard, described at rank 25 or above. She opens teleportation gates, controls high-ranked spells, and eventually learns to cast without the Weave after its destruction. That independent casting is difficult at first and reflects legendary finesse rather than immunity to the catastrophe; lower-ranked wizards cannot follow her transition safely. The corpus demonstrates broad legendary mastery but does not enumerate a complete spellbook. (Chapters 904, 918, and 1186)

Chosen divinity and battlefield enhancement

As Mystra's daughter and Chosen, Alustriel carries a trace of divinity and can expend divine force alongside wizard magic. Her large-scale enhancement warms and strengthens defenders across the wall, but the cost leaves her pale even with Silverymoon's formation supporting the cast. Chosen status also permits teleportation through the city's restricted magical network. These benefits derive partly from Mystra and the city's infrastructure, not solely from Alustriel's learned wizard levels. (Chapters 904 and 918)

Silverymoon resources and limits

Palace libraries, legendary research, city formations, military wizards, and Elminster's support give Alustriel options far beyond a solitary caster. They are state resources, not personal spells. Her tendency to fight at the wall and spend power on morale creates a strategic limitation: she can defeat high-ranked opponents and inspire thousands while still failing to prevent the city's fall. After the Weave collapses, even her well-funded arcanist program reaches only rank 4 spells in the available time. (Chapters 903–949 and 1143–1186)

Alustriel commands Silverymoon's palace, libraries, magical formations, and state resources rather than relying on one signature item.
