Solitary Unbowed

History

Jaehwan receives the Ice Dragon Sword after defeating the Ice Dragon King Velkisus on the ninety-ninth floor of the Tower of Nightmares. It is a Tower-made replica rather than the later true sword containing Velkisus's soul. After Jaehwan destroys the Tower, the weapon develops a will, a black sheen, and an appetite for equipment as Beastrein's soul coils within it. (Chapters 3–14, 218, 239)

In Gorgon, Meikal recognizes it as a spirit weapon and feeds it a Five-Horned Beast's horn, producing sharper, denser metal in its first Great Evolution. Meikal makes a scabbard from Garnak's horn, embeds Garnak's Majesty in it, and names the combined weapon Solitary Unbowed. The sword accepts the name with its first clear cry. (Chapters 23–29)

Solitary Unbowed accompanies Jaehwan through the Palace of Rebirth, the Bizarre Factory, and the Metaverse, repeatedly carrying his Stab and Destruction. It heals by consuming weapons and Horned Beast material, but damage from Sa Myeonggaram and the destruction of the Metaverse exceeds its ordinary regeneration. Ignel later repairs it and leaves the restored sword with Manri Shintong, who returns it during the Rift war. (Chapters 64–98, 128–177, 212)

In the Great Lands conflict, the sword confronts Jerome's genuine Ice Dragon Sword and rejects the claim that its replica origin makes it lesser. It later channels the Destruction that collapses Maiad's System. During the Time Waterfall, Solitary Unbowed finally speaks as Beastrein and becomes Jaehwan's argumentative companion through spans measured in billions of years. (Chapters 218–250)

Mulack's space-time power breaks the evolved blade in Panopticon, but Jaehwan continues to use it as a focus while alternate Jaehwans lend their experience and power. The broken sword is later found lodged in the Root. In the Revision's final scene it reappears at Jaehwan's side, still broken and temporarily unable to speak, yet humming as he prepares another Stab. (Chapters 244–266)

Properties and use

Solitary Unbowed grows by devouring equipment and Horned Beast horns. Three possible Great Evolutions can sharply increase its durability and performance, while ordinary damage regenerates if the spirit function remains healthy. Its black aura and rudimentary will appear before it can speak; the blade hums, cries, opens like a mouth, and expresses hunger or resistance to unfamiliar hands. (Chapters 11–32, 87)

Meikal's Garnak-horn scabbard is distinct from the blade. Its embedded Garnak's Majesty projects the pressure of a Five-Horned Beast, frightening or immobilizing lower Horned Beasts and weak opponents. Jaehwan can fight with the sword sheathed, but drawing it releases the scabbard's demonic aura and the blade's full attack. (Chapters 29, 35, 87)

The sword is primarily a conduit rather than the source of Jaehwan's techniques. It focuses Stab, World Stab, local Sanctuary manifestation, Way of the Wave, and Destruction Sword, and it can carry allied World Power or sever a divine Link when the associated Setting makes that possible. Its suitability for Jaehwan reflects their long adaptation to each other. (Chapters 64–175, 212–235)

Its limitations are physical and spiritual. Extreme attacks can outpace regeneration, damage the hilt and scabbard, or break even a Great-Evolved blade. Beastrein's presence grants intelligence and accumulated experience but does not make the weapon omnipotent: it fails against the Time Waterfall's enclosure, breaks under Mulack's control of space-time, and remains damaged when it returns in the Revision. (Chapters 177, 238–266)
