Vertus

Vertus is the Metaverse's First Floor Attendant and the former Vicegerent of the annihilated god Saville. Vertus helps administer the Tower, remembers Andersen's revolution, and guides Jaehwan between its entry floor and the Driver.

Biography

The Metaverse and its gods

Vertus recognizes Andersen when she descends through Jaehwan and hosts the travelers at the First Floor Waystation. Once Saville was annihilated, Vertus accepted service as a Tower Attendant because a godless Vicegerent had few ways to survive. That accommodation has lasted five hundred years and made Vertus protective of the Metaverse despite awareness of its exploitation. The Attendant warns that returning will hurt Andersen, fears the Driver with reverence, and urges Jaehwan to climb through official Tasks instead of destroying ceilings that support a refuge from Sanctuary Wars. (Chapters 113–114)

Vertus processes sponsor offers, a Premium High Pass, and Jaehwan's first-floor reward while trying to limit damage and interference. In private, the Attendant warns Rene that covert sponsorship could draw Alliance or Divine Throne attention and predicts that Andersen's history on the Sixth Floor will stop Jaehwan. That judgment proves wrong. When the Allies reach the Tenth Floor in record time, Vertus reappears, leads them to the Driver, edits the granted wishes into promotional footage, and continues ordinary service by bringing refreshments even as Jaehwan questions the Tower's purpose. When the Lord of Sloth prepares to leave, he designates the Leader as the next Driver and says Vertus will inherit the position if the Leader refuses. Vertus trembles at the possibility and looks to the departing Driver, who thanks the Attendant for long service. The narrative does not resolve whether Vertus ever assumes the role, and Vertus is not individually identified among the survivors or restored dead after Jaehwan destroys the Metaverse. Appearance and personality

The supplied chapters do not give Vertus a concrete body, clothing, age, or gendered appearance. A framed photograph at the Waystation shows Vertus smiling beside Andersen's former Vicegerent with both faces dirty. In person, Vertus serves tea, uses a handkerchief, and can remain invisible in a corner of the Driver's drawing room until called. (Chapters 113–114 and 171)

Vertus is courteous, restrained, and resigned. The Attendant serves unusually good tea, speaks in romantic language about surviving ruins, and handles increasingly absurd Tower damage with weary professionalism. Loyalty to administration coexists with sympathy for Andersen: Vertus warns her away, asks Jaehwan to care for her, and keeps photographs of the old companions. Fear of the Tower's hierarchy discourages overt rebellion, but Vertus challenges Rene's interference and interprets the Metaverse as meaningful shelter rather than only a prison. Powers and limitations

Tower administration

As First Floor Attendant, Vertus can receive private god messages, process promotions and paid passes, open reward displays and Doors, distribute Parts, access tower records, and edit Tenth Floor footage for public hot clips. Vertus also recognizes buffering, World Power, sponsor rules, and the conditions facing godless Vicegerents. These functions are institutional permissions rather than demonstrated personal combat Settings, and the Attendant repeatedly emphasizes limits imposed by the Alliance, Divine Thrones, Tower rules, and the Driver. Observation and concealment

Vertus can monitor effects such as Jaehwan's ceiling-breaking Stab, remain invisible in the Driver's room, and appear or vanish while guiding the Allies. The exact mechanics are not explained, and the text does not show Vertus fighting. Even accurate administrative knowledge does not make the Attendant's predictions certain: Vertus expects the Sixth Floor to destroy Jaehwan and Andersen, but they instead pass it and reach the final floor. Relationships

• Andersen: Vertus knew Andersen and her former Vicegerent before the revolution. Their reunion combines old familiarity with a warning that the Tower and Alliance have changed beyond what Andersen hopes to recover.
• Jaehwan: Vertus administers Jaehwan's entry, rewards, passes, and final ascent while repeatedly asking him not to damage the Metaverse. His success overturns Vertus's expectation that the Tower's history will stop him.
• Saville: Vertus served as Saville's Vicegerent until the god was annihilated. The loss left Tower servitude as one of the few available paths to survival.
• The Driver: Vertus serves the Lord of Sloth with fear, respect, and long-practiced competence. The Driver names Vertus as the fallback successor and thanks them before departure.
• Rene: Vertus recognizes Rene as a powerful outside god and warns against unauthorized interference, but cannot prevent her sponsorship of Jaehwan.
