Thanatos
Thanatos is the God of Mortality and one of the Eight Heavens, a sociable but unpredictable god whose interest in Jaehwan grows into open support against Rift and Great Lord Barcant.
Biography
From spectator to defender of the Abyss
Thanatos first follows Jaehwan's progress through sponsor commentary, treating the newcomer's behavior as both entertainment and a challenge to Metaverse convention. He later appears in person amid the Grand Auction's disorder and becomes identified among the gods friendly to Jaehwan whom Rift intends to pursue. When the Seventh Site is attacked, Thanatos and Shiyu end their long absence from the Abyss's battlefields and join Russell, Ethan, and Eoduksi against Barcant, explaining that they are fighting to protect the Abyss rather than merely serving Jaehwan. Their combined Settings crack the Great Lord's arm, but Barcant enters a Gigantes and uses 「Dragon's Dignity」 to paralyze the weaker gods. A single blow breaks all four of Thanatos's limbs and leaves him unable to fight; the corpus does not record his death. (Chapters 127–128, 147–148, 161, 183–188, 211, and 228)
Appearance and personality
The supplied chapters do not establish a stable physical description for Thanatos. His speech is casual, curious, and sometimes fickle: he enjoys unusual developments and teases other gods, yet ultimately accepts considerable personal danger once the Abyss itself is threatened. (Chapters 127–128, 147–148, and 228)
Powers and limitations
Thanatos is ranked among the Eight Heavens and manifests the Setting 「Twilight」. When fused with Shiyu's 「Youth」, it damages Barcant through a direct collision of Sanctuaries. The text does not define Twilight's independent effects. Thanatos remains vulnerable to a sufficiently large World Power gap: Barcant's amplified 「Dragon's Dignity」 stops his soul form from attacking, and the following physical strike incapacitates him. (Chapter 228)
Relationships
- Jaehwan: Thanatos moves from amused observer to a god publicly counted among Jaehwan's friends and therefore targeted by Rift. (Chapters 127–128, 211, and 228)
- Shiyu: The two Eight Heavens return to battle together, coordinate their charge, and fuse 「Youth」 with 「Twilight」 against Barcant. (Chapter 228)
Items
No named personal weapon or artifact is assigned to Thanatos in the supplied corpus. His demonstrated combat power comes from his Setting and Sanctuary. (Chapter 228)
