Martis

Martis is a former Anonymous God who leaves Yesterday, organizes the Gods of Today, and follows Jaehwan through the upper Metaverse. His title changes from God of the Grasslands to God of Tomorrow as he turns a brief experience of freedom into a lasting commitment.

Biography

Choosing Today

Martis is among the gods Jaehwan removes from Yesterday and subjects to ten subjective years of training inside a Time Cube. Once free, he chooses not to return to the cocoon. During Arteina's counterattack, he commands the Gods of Today, rallies them to protect the difficult life they have gained, and destroys drones with his longsword. After Yesterday collapses, uncertainty replaces exhilaration, but Martis leads the survivors who volunteer to accompany Jaehwan against the Alliance. He explicitly accepts that they may die or regret the choice, explaining that his Vicegerent also wants to help. (Chapters 142 and 147–150)

At the Black Shop, Martis and the Gods of Today use ten years of shared experience to combine their Sanctuaries into Today and repel stronger Alliance groups. Russell destroys that world with one step and nearly kills Martis, yet the immediate fear makes Martis feel more alive than centuries inside Yesterday. Jaehwan saves him, and Martis continues upward as the Alliance Leader of Today. He reaches the Ninth Floor, weeps openly when Eoduksi falls, and yields the sole right of ascent to Jaehwan rather than obeying a Task that demands the Allies kill one another. (Chapters 153–167)

From the final floor to tomorrow

Martis joins Jaehwan in stabbing through the Ninth Floor ceiling, promising a hundred or a thousand years of support while admitting he cannot promise ten thousand. He expends trust and World Power until the group breaks through, then contributes more power when Jaehwan destroys the Metaverse's final links. After the collapse, Martis continues to follow him even though Jaehwan cannot remember teaching him individually. The commitment is not based on personal recognition from Jaehwan, but on the experience of Today and the possibility of a tomorrow that Martis chose for himself. (Chapters 168–177)

In the Committee era, Martis is called the God of Tomorrow and stands among the Companions who try to prevent Jaehwan from leaving the Abyss. He later joins the search for Jaehwan after the Phantasmal Tree collapses, saying Jaehwan let him dream of tomorrow. The epilogue explains that the search party dwindles over decades through accidents and ordinary death, but it does not identify Martis's individual endpoint. His latest source-grounded state is therefore participation in the New World search, not a specifically narrated death. (Chapters 237–238 and 262)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no detailed account of Martis's face or original divine body. During the upper Metaverse campaign he fights through a body equipped with a “naked” Skin and carries a longsword. His expressions are unusually open for a god: he grins and cries when confronting death, weeps after Eoduksi's defeat, and bows with the solemnity of an ascetic after the group reaches the final floor. Martis begins with the habits of a dependent Anonymous God, but becomes earnest, brave, and emotionally direct once he chooses Today. He understands that one revelation cannot guarantee a meaningful life; his answer is to keep choosing the uncertain present anyway. He is capable of command and solidarity without pretending confidence can overcome every power gap. His willingness to admit the limits of his promise makes his loyalty more concrete than an oath of eternity would have been. (Chapters 147–150 and 168–177)

Powers and limitations

Divine strength and Stab

Martis is a high-grade god with enough World Power to destroy several of Arteina's drones in one longsword swing and contend with groups of veteran Alliance fighters. Ten years of practice improve his Stab and bring his soul into closer harmony with his Vicegerent. He can also transfer World Power to Jaehwan. These abilities remain far below the Abyss's supreme ranks: Russell's pressure silences and nearly kills him, while the Driver's authority forces Martis to his knees and leaves him unable to raise his head. (Chapters 147, 153, 167–175)

Sanctuary Bonding and Today

Martis coordinates Sanctuary Bonding among the Gods of Today. The technique temporarily combines Sanctuaries belonging to gods with different histories; their shared decade of training lets their World Power and Stabs resonate into the collective Sanctuary Today. For ordinary gods, attempting the same union can reverse World Power and cause death. Even a successful bond is not absolute: Russell shatters Today without resistance, and several participants suffer immediate backflow, proving that harmony improves their combined power without erasing rank differences. (Chapter 153)

Command

Martis organizes retreat lines, gathers the remaining Gods of Today into Rene's Ally group, and times their group attacks. This command is grounded in a shared choice rather than a coercive Setting. It holds the fighters together against Arteina and the Alliance, but cannot prevent casualties, desertion, or weaker gods from returning to their cocoons. The title “Alliance Leader of Today” recognizes that practical leadership; the corpus does not show him inheriting the former Alliance's institutions or Eoduksi's authority. Relationships

• Jaehwan: Jaehwan forces Martis to experience life outside Yesterday and teaches Stab to a group too large to remember individually. Martis follows him without requiring personal recognition, because Jaehwan's actions gave him the possibility of Today and tomorrow.

• Rene: Martis coordinates the Gods of Today under Rene's wider Ally group, reports battlefield losses to her, and recognizes her hidden identity as the God of Fate. They continue climbing together and later remain among the Companions tied to the Metaverse.

• The Gods of Today: Martis is their field leader and spokesman. Their shared decade enables Sanctuary Bonding, while his choices turn a temporary group of liberated Anonymous Gods into an alliance willing to face the Metaverse's rulers.

• His Vicegerent: Martis says his Vicegerent wants to help Jaehwan and develops unusually close harmony with that soul through shared training. The Vicegerent is never named, and the corpus does not separately describe their appearance or later fate.

Items

• Longsword: Martis uses a longsword to channel World Power, destroy Arteina's drones, and perform Stab. The weapon is never named or given a distinct Setting in the supplied chapters. (Chapters 147 and 153)
