Janya

Janya is the eldest and strongest of the criminal Janya Brothers, a Geumcheon Hall operative seeking the Wraithstone carried by Jaehwan. Janya's defeat drives him to induce complete soul contamination, transforming into a medium Forgotten One before Jaehwan kills him.

Biography

The conflict over Gorgon

Janya, Janmyung, and Janmang join Geumcheon Hall after becoming infamous outlaws in the Forest Zone. They ambush Mino to force her to deliver Jaehwan and the Wraithstone, using hostages and a soundproof barrier to isolate the fight. Janya claims the stone belonged to Geumcheon because the Hall had been trading with the Nokmyeong Great Family, but cannot answer why its recovery requires a covert kidnapping instead of an official claim. He blocks Mino's strongest attack, orders the surrounding force, and closes in once her spiritual power is exhausted, only for Jaehwan to arrive. (Chapter 27)

Janya initially welcomes Jaehwan as a target, then realizes that the supposed Non-Adapter can counter the brothers' 「Shadow Secret Art」 and nearly take his head with Light Stab. He gives up an ear to evade the attack, accepts that Jaehwan is stronger, and changes tactics by placing hostages in the path of every possible Stab. That response temporarily exploits Jaehwan's reluctance to kill people he is beginning to recognize as human. When Karlton intervenes, however, the brothers retreat and release the Black Cloud, contaminating everyone left in the tavern while they await Geumcheon reinforcements. (Chapters 28–29)

Jaehwan emerges from the Black Cloud, kills the reinforcements, and offers Janya survival in exchange for the Dream Demon's location. Janya refuses, not from simple loyalty but from fear of Geumcheon Hall's master and belief that the master alone can fulfill the brothers' accumulated hatred toward the world. After looking at his fallen brothers, Janya swallows a corrupted stone, raises soul contamination to completion, and becomes a medium Forgotten One whose desire has consumed memory and reason. Jaehwan kills the transformed Janya with Normal Stab; the lifeless soul disperses into silver dust and returns to the World Tree. (Chapters 29–30)

Appearance and personality

Janya's ordinary human appearance is not described in detail. Jaehwan's Light Stab takes one ear during their first exchange, and Janya later tightens a mask before reentering the Black Cloud. After swallowing the corrupted stone, black veins rise across a rapidly swelling body, the torso splits into an enormous toothed mouth, and tentacles emerge around it. This monstrous shape is presented as the Forgotten One's true nature rather than a disguise. (Chapters 28–30)

Janya is cruel, pragmatic, and strongly attached to his brothers. He readily threatens Mino, uses hostages, and unleashes contamination across allies and captives, yet he also shields his injured brothers and studies Jaehwan's technique closely enough to change a losing strategy. He accepts unfavorable evidence more quickly than many opponents, but faith and fear tied to Geumcheon's master keep him from surrendering information. His final transformation turns that chosen defiance into the loss of every memory and motive that produced it. (Chapters 27–30)

Powers and limitations

Adaptation and Shadow Secret Art

Janya is a seasoned fourth-stage Adapter, the threshold of the higher Adaptations, while his two brothers are slightly below that stage. Together they use the leaked 「Shadow Secret Art」, moving through doppelganger-like shadows and launching hidden blades from many directions. The three-person formation is reputed to contend with an adult Five-Horned Beast, and Janya can block Mino's Bitter Cold Sword Form directly. Jaehwan's rapid Light Stabs can strike every false and real blade, however, and Karlton's 「Silver Restraint」 is a particularly unfavorable matchup for Adapters. (Chapters 27–29)

Forgotten One transformation

By swallowing a corrupted Wraithstone-like jewel after exposure to Black Cloud, Janya forces soul contamination to one hundred percent. His spiritual-power coefficient nearly doubles from fourth-stage level to beyond a Fifth Adapter and perhaps near the Sixth Adaptation; the resulting tentacles can absorb spiritual power from nearby bodies. The price is complete: memory and reason disappear beneath hunger and other desires, producing a medium Forgotten One rather than a stronger human combat state. The power still cannot withstand Jaehwan's Normal Stab. (Chapters 29–30)

Relationships

• Janmyung and Janmang: Janya commands the younger brothers, fights with them through their combination art, shields them during retreat, and looks back at their fallen bodies before choosing transformation.
• Jaehwan: Janya seeks Jaehwan's Wraithstone and initially mistakes his lack of Adaptation for weakness. Jaehwan dismantles the brothers' formation, survives the Black Cloud, and kills Janya after the transformation.
• Mino: Janya attempts to use Mino as bait and defeats her through superior numbers and preparation. Her resistance delays him long enough for Jaehwan to arrive.
• Karlton: Karlton's 「Silver Restraint」 and 「Edict」 counter the Geumcheon force, prompting Janya to release Black Cloud rather than continue a conventional battle.

• Black Cloud: Janya and his brothers deploy the soul-contaminating substance inside the tavern, accepting severe danger to allies and captives in an attempt to stop Jaehwan and Karlton.
