James

James is a bearded Gorgon checkpoint guard who rises from assistant to chief and later becomes an instructor preserving Jaehwan's Stab. His early suspicion and petty corruption give way to gratitude, regret, and a practical commitment to teach later generations what he once lacked the courage to follow.

Biography

Gorgon's northern checkpoint

James serves as Karlton's assistant at Gorgon's northern gate, where his humor and willingness to overlook minor offenses have softened the chief's severe reputation. He knows Mino, accepts horn powder from her as a bribe, but becomes unusually determined to stop the unidentified Jaehwan. When Jaehwan exposes the checkpoint's bribery in front of Karlton, James tries to frame the same act as an offense by the visitor and expects punishment to fall elsewhere. Karlton instead recognizes the Wraithstone and admits Jaehwan under an urgent Inner Citadel order, while James is left to answer for his own conduct. (Chapters 18–20)

James's loyalty to Karlton proves more substantial than that misconduct. When Black Cloud pushes Karlton toward complete soul contamination, James brings every medicine the checkpoint holds, including precious Three-Horned Beast powder, and tries to shield the chief from the Anti-Evil Squad. After Jaehwan and Chunghuh save Karlton and Mino, James awkwardly thanks the man he had resented, pays for a drink, and promises entry through the north gate without another document check. He later succeeds Karlton as checkpoint chief and joins the Abyss Expedition, but fear and mistrust resurface when evidence that Jaehwan is alive rather than a dead soul makes James question the leader's identity and the fate of the recovered Fruits. Much later, James teaches hundreds of trainees the basic forms called the Jaehwan Three Swords. He embellishes old sayings and legends, yet answers honestly when pressed: he knew Jaehwan but did not leave for the Abyss because cowardice kept him from trusting him. Rather than conceal that limit, James tells the trainees they may go farther and drills Light Stab, Normal Stab, and Hard Stab in the hope that someone will pierce the world he could not see. Appearance and personality

James is a bearded man whose ordinary appearance contrasts with the exceptional figures around him. In later life he scratches near his lips when challenged by students and demonstrates Stab before a large class. The chapters do not otherwise specify his build, clothing, or visible age progression. (Chapters 18 and 249)

Talkative, mischievous, and initially self-serving, James can charm travelers, accept bribes, and rapidly redirect blame. He is also loyal to colleagues and capable of revising judgment: he gives up valuable medicine for Karlton, thanks Jaehwan despite embarrassment, and eventually interprets his own failure as a lesson for students rather than a heroic past. His skepticism during the expedition is personally meaningful but vulnerable to manipulation, showing that honesty and fear remain intertwined. (Chapters 18–20, 31, 38, 97, and 249)

Powers and limitations

Checkpoint training

As assistant and later chief of Gorgon's northern checkpoint, James is trusted with security, identity verification, access regulations, and the response to dangerous entrants. He carries an unnamed weapon when trying to stop Jaehwan at the gate, but no Adaptation stage or named early Skill is given. His value lies more in familiarity with Gorgon, its residents, soul-contamination medicine, and the practical compromises of border enforcement than in a recorded combat feat. Jaehwan Three Swords

By the later period, James can teach and demonstrate Light Stab, Normal Stab, and Hard Stab. His practiced Hard Stab produces a booming impact and disperses a substantial patch of cloud, enough to impress trainees. The narration explicitly calls its destructive power pitiful for the technique, and James contrasts it with Jaehwan changing the sky through Normal Stab. No World Stab mastery or Unique World is attributed to James, making him a competent transmitter of fundamentals rather than a successor at Jaehwan's level. (Chapter 249)

Relationships

• Karlton: James works beneath Karlton, whose uncompromising law enforcement he both moderates and fears. When Karlton faces soul extinction, James exhausts the checkpoint's medicine and stands with the guards trying to protect him.
• Jaehwan: James begins as Jaehwan's suspicious and corrupt gatekeeper, later thanks him for saving Karlton, then doubts him during the expedition. In later life he openly regrets failing to trust and uses Jaehwan's Stab to educate a new generation.
• Mino: James and Mino share an old, teasing acquaintance and a history of informal checkpoint deals. Her attempt to bribe him sets up the confrontation that exposes both his corruption and Jaehwan's unusual identity.
• Chunghuh: Chunghuh's intervention helps save Karlton when ordinary medicine fails, allowing James's desperate loyalty to end in recovery rather than loss.

Items

• Horn powder medicine: James carries soul-contamination medicine and offers his saved Three-Horned Beast powder when Karlton is dying. It proves insufficient against Black Cloud's extreme contamination.
