Pale Justice

Pale Justice is an ordinary-looking longsword with a wooden crossguard whose strength changes with its target: it is a perfect-rank level-eight weapon under normal conditions and rises to level-one legendary power against evil spirits, undead, demons, and devils. Its moral inscription and specialized properties make it a natural weapon for Natasha Violet, but its custody passes through several hands before it becomes her regular blade. History

A vanished sword found in Rhine's treasury

John first recounts Pale Justice as a famous sword that vanished with a Grand Arcana Knight in the Dark Mountain Range. The story preserves its inscription: justice may look pale beside splendour and power, yet anyone can represent it. Much later, Lucien Evans finds the weapon among Rhine's collected treasures. Identification reveals why such a plain blade was kept there, and Lucien selects it for his mission among vampires because its effective rank rises against evil creatures. The corpus does not establish how Rhine obtained it or whether the vanished knight had been its legal owner, so the intervening custody remains unknown. (Chapters 15, 384–385)

Lucien could not meet its normal strength requirement unaided at first. He combined Ogre Glove with enhancement spells, and later used Baler's Transformation to assume the body and blood power of a radiant knight. He carried Pale Justice through the sphinx tomb, the World of Souls, and a disrupted portal; unlike several equipped items, it survived the turbulence undamaged in his storage bag. The flight from Congus

When a hidden specter was embedded in Lucien's body, he transformed and carefully drew the blade across his own forehead. Pale Justice forced the watcher out without requiring Lucien to understand its exact implantation first. During the struggle with Congus and Rudolf II, Lucien deliberately threw the sword to Natasha, whose knightly strength and skill made fuller use of it. She defended him, destroyed specter-like projections, and repeatedly used the blade to cut back the World of Souls influence that threatened to expose him. Their decision to remain together kept the weapon in Natasha's hands through the pursuit rather than completing a clean handoff back to Lucien. (Chapters 483, 488–491)

Natasha then used Pale Justice to tear through defenses on undead servants, protect Lucien while he removed Congus's imprint from the Congus Ring, and strike the demigod-lich's skull. Even when the aftermath of Congus's and Maltimus's powers nearly broke it, the blade held a small protective space around the exhausted pair. Those events show its importance as protection and anti-undead force, but also that it can be overwhelmed and physically endangered by power above its effective level. (Chapters 494–496, 500–504)

Natasha's working blade

After their return, Natasha retained Pale Justice and made it a recurring weapon for defense and training. She used it against the Poisonous Devil, relied on it while the Sword of Truth was not yet under her control, and carried it as part of her protection in the Nekso Palace. Later she practiced with it in the Atomic Universe and on the Scarlet Plain, where the blade served as a physical channel while she refined her own Sword of Truth blood power. This later use does not transform Pale Justice into the Sword of Truth; the weapon in her hand remains Pale Justice while the cutting force comes increasingly from her bloodline and control. Abilities and properties

• Pale Justice is a perfect-rank level-eight extraordinary sword against ordinary targets and a level-one legendary weapon against evil spirits, undead creatures, demons, and devils. Its enhanced rank is conditional, not a permanent rating against every opponent. (Chapters 384–385, 491)
• A wielder must possess at least the strength of a level-six radiant knight. Lucien initially met that threshold only through equipment and enhancement spells, then later through Baler's Transformation; simply possessing the sword did not let him ignore the requirement. (Chapters 384–385, 483)
• The wielder gains immunity to fear, charm, ferocity, and helplessness, and attacks are guided toward their target. These protections do not make the wielder invulnerable to raw force, poison, exhaustion, or attacks above the sword's defensive capacity. (Chapters 384, 495, 504, 535)
• Its anti-evil edge tears through defenses on undead bodies, specters, devilish powers, and evil projections. Demonstrated uses include destroying a watcher embedded in Lucien, cutting vaporous and shadowlike remnants, and severing Congus's spiritual imprint from his ring. (Chapters 483, 489, 494, 496)
• The blade can protect a small nearby area from death- and life-deprivation effects. Under the combined aftermath of two top powers it trembled as if near breaking and sheltered only a tiny range, establishing both a defensive use and a clear scale limit. (Chapter 504)
• Pale Justice interacts especially well with Natasha's own control and blood power, but her later wide-area cuts on the Scarlet Plain are explicitly described as practice of the Sword of Truth blood power while she happens to hold Pale Justice. Those results should not all be attributed to the artifact alone. (Chapters 645, 678)
