Rhine

Rhine is a first-generation vampire prince who moves through the story first as an elegant traveling bard and later as the Silver-Eyed Count, the Observer. His interest in gifted people leads him to support Lucien Evans before Lucien knows Rhine's nature, while his connection to Alterna makes him a central figure in conflicts involving vampires, the World of Souls, and the Dark Congress. His habitual detachment is genuine but incomplete: once a danger threatens the world or a person he has chosen to help, curiosity becomes planning, personal risk, and sustained cooperation. (Chapters 9–117, 370, 624–644, and 775–782)

Biography

The bard watching Aalto

Rhine enters Aalto as a silver-haired bard and musician whose knowledge is much broader than his role suggests. He plays violin and keyboard instruments at a professional level, helps Victor and the instrument maker Shavell turn Lucien's mechanical suggestion into an improved harpsichord, and supports the rehearsals that culminate in Victor's successful concert. Rhine is interested in Lucien from their early meetings: instead of joining the noble students' contempt, he watches to see whether the poor beginner can reason through practical problems, offers measured encouragement, and recognizes that Lucien is concealing knowledge and ambitions beyond music. His contribution to the concert is quiet but consequential, and Victor explicitly credits Rhine's instrument work and repeated support as essential to the performance. (Chapters 9, 22, 38–39, 49–68)

The disguise also lets Rhine observe Lucien's hidden life without forcing an immediate confrontation. He catches Lucien moving secretly at night but accepts an obviously false explanation, later destroys the incriminating underground laboratory that Lucien cannot safely remove himself, and says only that he wants a promising musician to advance without distraction. Rhine turns information about the Congress of Magic into an incentive, promising the route only after Lucien can hold a personal concert. The bargain tests Lucien's patience and gives his public career a reason to mature, but Rhine's willingness to eliminate the laboratory shows that this is more than idle entertainment. (Chapters 90–99)

After Lucien fulfills the condition, Rhine gives him the information that changes his future. He explains that the Congress is based in Allyn near Rentato, outlines the political balance among the Church, northern and southern nobles, and sorcerers, and recommends that Lucien acquire enough power to survive the journey before leaving Aalto. When asked why he helps, Rhine calls himself an observer and outsider attracted by an interesting person, preserving his mystery while opening a practical path to safety and education. The result is decisive: Lucien leaves Aalto with a destination rather than wandering toward the surviving ancient sorcerers, and remembers Rhine's garden conversation as the point at which his way to the Congress became clear. (Chapters 116–119 and 294)

A prisoner directing a rescue

Rhine's deeper conflict emerges after he is trapped in the World of Souls. The later account establishes that he and Sard originally cooperated against Tiphotidis, the Master of Argent, so that Rhine could investigate the World of Souls and its promise of real immortality. Sard betrayed him during the exploration, leaving Rhine able to reach Lucien only through dreams and projections. When Rhine senses a terrible being waking within that realm, he does not treat escape as his only concern: he warns that the change may overturn the main world and tells Lucien to inform the Highest Council if the private plan fails. His willingness to expose the secret as a last resort distinguishes caution from selfish concealment. (Chapters 369–370, 484, and 611)

Because his own power cannot freely reach the main world, Rhine constructs a distributed operation that borrows older sites of power. He directs Lucien to his castle, the kuo-toan altar, a desert tomb, and Thanos' underground palace, provides a spell and gestures, and leaves a transformation mask, ritual components, information, and compensation. He also calibrates the danger to Lucien's expected strength and warns him about specific contamination risks. The plan asks a great deal of Lucien, but it is not a blind command: Rhine makes clear that an impossible task should be abandoned and reported rather than pursued into death. (Chapters 370 and 376–415)

Lucien completes the linked rites and summons Alterna at Observer's Castle. The arrival drives off Dracula and draws the unknown existence of the World of Souls into a clash with the Silver Moon; the castle is badly damaged and retreats into the Night Highland to recover. The immediate outcome is ambiguous to Lucien, but Rhine survives the confrontation and later operates freely again. His plan consequently does more than arrange his release: it exposes the World of Souls as a danger that the Congress can no longer ignore and gives Lucien direct experience of forces near the setting's highest level. (Chapters 411–418)

The Realm of Gates and the Chamber of Immortality

Years later, Rhine follows the mysterious remnant of Sard back into the Realm of Gates. A mimic capable of reproducing body, blood, scent, memories, and abilities ambushes him, and his initial recklessness leaves him seriously wounded. When he meets Lucien there, both refuse to rely on appearances alone; they authenticate each other through the aura of Alterna and the Silver Moon's mark. Rhine then abandons a solitary pursuit that has become untenable and joins Lucien's attempt to retreat, contributing his knowledge of ancient history and his experience of the realm while acknowledging that Lucien is better able to calculate its changing coordinates. (Chapters 624–627)

Their escape fails when a false Lucien and false Church party manipulate the group into a devastating clash. Rhine uses Real Dream and Night Travel to carry Lucien away from the center of Eternal Blaze, saving them at the cost of injury and an uncontrolled displacement deeper into the maze. Once retreat becomes more dangerous than investigation, he helps search the death-themed worlds behind the gates, recognizes early Meshkate funeral patterns, and connects their customs to the realm's structure. This habit of observation repeatedly converts decorative or frightening details into usable hypotheses; at the same time, Rhine accepts that historical knowledge cannot explain every mechanism and does not pretend certainty where the evidence ends. (Chapters 627–631)

In Thanos' ruined laboratory, Rhine and Lucien trace Sard's remnant, examine the linked powers of the World of Souls and Mountain Paradise, and survive the monster created through the ancient experiment. Rhine's Real Dream helps trap the Original Fire in a false duplicate of the laboratory, and his vampire swarm helps prevent a hostile power from completing its arrival. He continues with Lucien onto the Pathway of Immortality, endures its transformations and illusions without surrendering consciousness, and blocks Lucien's view of the uncontrolled mysterious existence when looking at it becomes dangerous. At the Chamber itself, Rhine is as surprised and disappointed as the other witnesses by the vast cosmos it reveals; he does not invent an answer simply because the promised secret fails to meet expectations. Alterna ultimately carries both allies out, ending the expedition with Rhine alive and with his partnership with Lucien strengthened by mutual rescue rather than one-sided patronage. (Chapters 637–644)

Speaker for a reorganized Dark Congress

The later crisis among dark creatures turns Rhine's connection to Alterna into political responsibility. He remains influential enough among vampires that a Dark Congress decision made in his absence may not bind them, and he is identified as the only legendary figure able to summon the Silver Moon directly. When Dracula, Danisos, Gonheim, and their partners plot against rival legends, Rhine infiltrates the operation in the identity of David rather than announce himself. He reveals the substitution only when Alterna strikes Danisos, creates a moon with his own power, and holds Gonheim in combat long enough for the demon prince's coalition to collapse. The episode shows both the reach of his disguises and his capacity to fight a top legendary opponent without reducing his role to Alterna's messenger. (Chapters 763, 772–780)

After Alterna declares herself president, Rhine translates her short announcement into a workable political argument. He tells the assembled legends that their era is uniquely dangerous but also offers unprecedented chances to advance; isolated powers are likely to be destroyed, whereas a consolidated Congress can protect members and exploit new opportunities. He does not claim that old hostility has vanished. Instead, he frames cooperation around survival and interest, reads the hesitation in the room, and gives former opponents a way to accept the new order without pretending that they have become friends. His intervention turns Alterna's victory over Danisos into an initial agreement to reorganize the Dark Congress. (Chapters 780–781)

Back at Observer's Castle, Rhine continues acting as interpreter between Alterna's ancient memory and Lucien's questions. He explains the emergence of early supernatural beings, the conflict that ended the Age of Mythology, and the severing of stable passages that confined the Lord of Hell, the Will of Abyss, and Alterna away from the main world. He explicitly warns that Alterna's oldest recollections are dreamlike and sometimes distorted, marking their evidentiary limit. By the end of this phase, the former outsider is still playful and independent, but he has accepted a durable role in the new Congress and in Lucien's investigation of the world's oldest structures. (Chapter 782)

Appearance and personality

Rhine is a strikingly handsome man with pale skin, long silver hair, and silver eyes associated with moonlight. In Aalto he favors black clothing with dark-red or red accents; his typical red shirt or vest and black coat later make him conspicuous even in the colorless World of Souls. He moves with deliberate elegance, often straightening his clothes, cleaning his hands with a handkerchief, or bowing like a musician at a curtain call. In his vampire form he can unfold enormous black bat wings, while paintings and impersonations preserve the same silver-haired, silver-eyed identity. (Chapters 38, 90, 385, 567, 624, 713, and 780–782)

His manner is relaxed, humorous, and frequently enigmatic. Rhine likes talented young people, rare historical facts, artistic performance, and situations whose outcome he cannot already predict. He may treat danger with the etiquette of a dinner or a concert, but the pose does not eliminate judgment: he retreats when a wounded expedition becomes irrational, insists on authentication after meeting a perfect mimic, and changes priorities when survival demands it. His title “Observer” reflects both a genuine love of watching history unfold and a cultivated distance that keeps others from knowing all his purposes. (Chapters 92, 117, 370, 624–631, and 638)

Rhine's attachments are expressed indirectly. He initially describes Lucien as merely interesting, yet removes evidence that could condemn him, gives him the route to the Congress, trusts him with a rescue plan, shares knowledge and rewards, and repeatedly risks himself beside him. He also accepts without embarrassment that Alterna created and uses him as a means to enter the main world. This combination of irony, loyalty, and clear-eyed self-knowledge makes him less detached than he claims and more reliable than his evasive answers first suggest. (Chapters 99, 117, 370, 626–644, and 782)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Rhine is a first-generation vampire and, after his earlier imprisonment, explicitly identifies himself as a level-three legendary vampire. He is not presented as following the Congress's arcana ladder, and the supplied corpus does not establish a chronological sequence of formal rank changes. His power combines the natural abilities of a vampire prince, dream and movement talents, exceptional historical knowledge, extensive preparation, and a unique channel to Alterna. (Chapters 370, 624–626, and 775)

First-generation vampire body

Rhine has the speed, senses, transformation, recovery, and enchantment associated with a high-ranking vampire. He can move fast enough to leave fading shadows, take the form of a bat or divide into a swarm, identify living beings and remnants by scent, and recover from wounds with extraordinary speed. His silver eyes can induce a powerful sleep-like enchantment, while his blood and aura are distinctive enough to serve as identity evidence when ordinary magical checks fail. These traits support infiltration, pursuit, close combat, and survival rather than a single fixed attack pattern. (Chapters 624–630, 637, and 780)

The same nature has clear vulnerabilities. Holy or paradise-derived light suppresses his power and causes his body to smoke, become transparent, and involuntarily alternate between human and bat forms. In Mountain Paradise's influence he loses combat ability and must be carried until the effect is removed. A stronger enemy can also overcome Real Dream by raw suppression, and Rhine's own level-three strength is below the peak-legendary power he can briefly access through Alterna. His recovery is impressive but not immediate after severe internal injury, so he sometimes depends on allies or prepared items while it proceeds. (Chapters 633–640)

Real Dream and Night Travel

Real Dream lets Rhine impose convincing dream environments that confuse location and perception. In Thanos' laboratory he makes the Original Fire see duplicate laboratories on both sides of a gate, preventing the enemy from identifying which route is real and allowing Lucien to control the confrontation. During the mimic battle, Rhine combines the dream state with Night Travel to divert part of Eternal Blaze's destructive force and remove himself and Lucien from the blast center. The technique can protect, deceive, and confine, but it is not absolute: the ancient monster in the laboratory breaks Rhine's dream through overwhelming strength. (Chapters 628, 637, and 640)

Night Travel moves through barriers of space and time rather than following ordinary routes. Rhine uses it as an escape and rescue talent, but under the pressure of Eternal Blaze he cannot control the destination precisely and carries the pair deeper into the Realm of Gates. The episode demonstrates both its unusual defensive value and its limitation under extreme conditions. The two vampire talents interact well—dream distortion prevents an enemy from responding correctly while Night Travel changes the actual position—but neither guarantees safety against a demigod-level or overwhelmingly stronger opponent. (Chapters 628 and 778)

Silver Moon channel and moonlight combat

Rhine is the only legendary vampire explicitly said to summon Alterna directly. He can lend the aura of the Primordial Ancestor as proof of identity, create a route for Alterna's projection, and borrow the Silver Moon's power for a temporary increase to the peak of legendary. This is not permanent personal mastery: after he invokes the power against the Realm of Gates mimic, the ability requires time before it can be used again, leaving him reliant on his native level-three strength. The summoning also serves a strategic purpose beyond combat, allowing Alterna to intervene in moments when restrictions would otherwise keep her out of the main world. (Chapters 370, 624–626, 644, 775, and 782)

Rhine can also wield moonlight with his own power. During the Dark Congress ambush he raises a cold moon without summoning Alterna, conducts its movement like a symphony, and collapses its radiance into Gonheim's field of darkness. The clash is strong enough to keep the top legendary demon occupied and force him to accept a hit in order to escape. The distinction matters: Rhine's own moon shows that he is a formidable legendary combatant, while Alterna's arrival and peak-level empowerment remain borrowed and conditional states. (Chapter 780)

Observation, history, and artistic skill

Rhine has lived long enough to witness major figures and changing civilizations, but his expertise is more than memory. He reads old magic patterns closely, distinguishes early Meshkate burial practice from later versions, recognizes the workmanship of McLeod's puppet, and uses cultural detail to form hypotheses about the Realm of Gates. He also knows the political history of the Church and Congress, the geography of hidden passages and old ritual sites, and the risks of many supernatural species. He marks uncertainty when a conclusion rests on damaged records or Alterna's dreamlike recollections, which keeps observation from becoming false omniscience. (Chapters 117, 370–412, 625, 629–638, and 782)

His artistic abilities are practical as well as decorative. Rhine is an accomplished violinist and keyboard player, understands instrument mechanics well enough to help develop the piano, supports rehearsals, and uses the timing and gestures of a conductor even in combat. Disguise and performance reinforce each other: he can live convincingly as a bard, replace a conspirator's agent without discovery, and turn poise into misdirection. These talents do not replace his supernatural abilities, but they explain why observation, infiltration, and carefully staged intervention are his preferred methods. (Chapters 22, 38–68, and 780)

Relationships

  • Lucien Evans: Rhine begins by watching and quietly protecting Lucien, then gives him the route to the Congress and entrusts him with the rescue operation. Their later partnership in the Realm of Gates is reciprocal: each authenticates, rescues, and supplies knowledge the other lacks.
  • Alterna: Rhine is Alterna's first-generation descendant and unique intermediary to the main world. He accepts being her summoning channel, interprets her intentions to the Dark Congress, and speaks for her ancient memories while acknowledging their limits.
  • Sard: Rhine once cooperates with Sard to defeat Tiphotidis and investigate immortality, but Sard betrays and traps him. Rhine later follows Sard's surviving remnant into the Realm of Gates, seeking both explanation and an end to their unresolved conflict.
  • Victor: As a fellow musician, Rhine helps Victor improve the piano, supports his rehearsals, and shares sincere satisfaction in the success of the Aalto concert.
  • Douglas: Rhine admires Douglas's role in founding modern arcana despite having overlooked his early rise. In the Realm of Gates he cooperates cautiously with Douglas and Fernando, and later conveys ancient history relevant to Douglas's and Lucien's research.
