Alterna

Alterna is the natural-born demigod identified with the Silver Moon, the primordial ancestor of vampires, and eventually the president of the Dark Congress. She is older than the world's present civilizations and is one of the few beings who can contend directly with the pope, Maltimus, and other demigods. Although the narration often uses feminine pronouns for the blond girl in whom Alterna manifests, Rhine explains that the primordial existence does not possess an inherent gender. Her apparently simple appetites and terse speech coexist with patience, ancient knowledge, and an ability to construct plans whose purpose becomes visible only after they succeed. (Chapters 370, 482, 780–782)

Biography

Primordial awakening and the severing of the worlds

Alterna's oldest history is related by Rhine from memories that Alterna shared with him. She began as a half-awake consciousness whose perception resembled a dream, then fully awoke when magical creatures were emerging and intelligent life had not yet taken its present form. Alongside the Lord of Hell and the Will of Abyss, she was one of only three candidates who completed the transition into natural demigods. Their early existence was governed more by instinct than disciplined will: Alterna fought the other primordial powers and joined half-awake beings such as the Blue Gate and the ancient elven trees against the false gods and the forces gathering around hell and the abyss. (Chapter 782)

That conflict ended by permanently changing the world's geography. The half-awake existences sacrificed their wills while Alterna twisted time and space, severing the stable channels that had joined the main material world to other dimensions. The act kept hell and the abyss from freely entering the material world, but it also prevented Alterna from walking the land whenever she wished. Anticipating that restriction, she created vampires and werewolves and entrusted Rhine with the means to summon her at decisive moments. This later account explains why the supposedly omnipresent Silver Moon usually acts through moonlight, a projection, or a descendant rather than simply appearing in person. (Chapter 782)

Much later, during the War of Dawn, Alterna accepted a role in Abel and Dracula's attempt to kill the pope. Having observed the destruction of Antiffler, she understood enough about God's Arrival to use herself as bait: she would take the pope's greatest attack, after which the two vampire princes would kill him while he was weakened. The premise was sound but her estimate was incomplete. The pope used God's Arrival twice, killed Abel, and drove Alterna away with severe wounds. Her survival demonstrated that a demigod could endure the divine power, but the injury required a long recovery and the failed attack cost one of her descendants his life. (Chapters 876–878 and 895)

Summoning, fall, and refuge with Lucien

By the main narrative, Alterna has become a legendary name even to the Congress of Magic. Rhine recruits Lucien Evans to activate a chain of old ritual sites and complete a summoning at Observer's Castle, hoping that the Primordial Ancestor can free him and stop the danger emerging from the World of Souls. When Dracula attacks the castle, Alterna answers the rite despite the vampire prince's attempt to cut off moonlight. Her blond figure emerges within a descended silver moon and synchronizes with Lucien long enough to strike through him. The slash splits Dracula and makes him flee, while Lucien temporarily perceives possibilities of the world from Alterna's higher perspective. (Chapters 370 and 415–417)

Alterna's real target is the mysterious existence rising from the World of Souls. She shatters its surrounding monochrome layer, but the two powers collide and fall together into a newly discovered alternate dimension. The confrontation halts the immediate threat, breaks the mysterious existence into pieces, and leaves Alterna too injured to maintain her former state. Rhine later explains that the silver moon and darkness will eventually restore her even after apparent death, but the natural return would be extremely slow. Her choice therefore protects the material world at the price of another dangerous period of weakness and gives every major faction a reason to search for the place where she fell. (Chapters 415–418, 433, and 464)

Years later, Alterna finds Lucien inside that dimension after killing the confined Lord of Underworld. Reduced to a genderless-looking blond girl with crimson eyes, she bluntly asks for more of the “cheese” represented by compatible godhood. She rejects ordinary flesh and later refuses the portions of Asin's godhood associated with beauty and love, taking only death and resurrection rather than absorbing powers that might conflict with her nature. Too weak to remain outside, she enters Lucien's left hand, warns him about the one-eyed Lord of War, and sleeps in his blood and flesh. The refuge is not merely parasitic: she has already suppressed a surveillance specter in him, warns him through involuntary movements, and nullifies divine commands that would otherwise kill him. (Chapters 482–486)

Lucien responds by actively feeding Alterna the compatible godhoods held by Ell and the Lord of War. Through his left hand, her will destroys divine defenses, restrains false gods, and briefly fights the World of Souls' power in Antanas, but she is still too weak to win alone. After the Demigod-lich destroys Antanas, Alterna begins consuming the resulting fragments while remaining attached to Lucien. Their resistance creates repeated outbreaks in which black, white, and gray engulf him, temporarily stopping his movement and exposing both him and Natasha Violet to pursuit. Alterna agrees to conceal Natasha and accepts Pale Justice's help in suppressing those outbreaks, making the week-long escape a three-way cooperation rather than a simple rescue by an almighty patron. (Chapters 486–501)

The fragments' most violent counterattack nearly traps Lucien and Natasha in distorted time, but Alterna eventually digests the alien power and reappears as a recovered demigod. She destroys the pursuing undead, expels Congus, returns Lucien and Natasha to the Congress's region, and leaves a trace of her air in Lucien's hand for a later summoning. Soon afterward she ambushes the Lord of Hell's projection under Lucien's Eternal Blaze, depriving Maltimus of a useful foothold and confirming that the strange alliance formed during her recovery has survived the crisis. (Chapters 501–506, 542, and 644)

President of the Dark Congress

Alterna later turns her attention to a divided Dark Congress whose leaders are plotting against each other while the broader world grows more dangerous. Working with Rhine and Lucien, she waits until Danisos, Dracula, Gonheim, and the other competing powers have committed themselves to battle. She then descends directly onto Danisos, drives the Sword of Origin and Destiny through his back, and withstands his attempt to slow the surrounding space and time. Rather than kill him, she leaves a continuing wound, reduces the primordial dragon to a much smaller form, and removes the strongest immediate obstacle to her authority. (Chapter 780)

Her announcement—“I am your president”—is much shorter than the political program that follows. Rhine translates her intent into a plan to reform the Dark Congress for an age in which isolated legends can no longer assume their safety. Alterna's overwhelming victory makes refusal dangerous, while the common threats make union rational; vampires, werewolves, dragons, demons, and other leaders therefore accept her presidency. She then gives Danisos's severed flesh and wing to Lucien as “food,” revealing both her practical gratitude and the appetite she is restraining around the many powerful creatures now under her authority. (Chapters 780–781)

Alterna is not a conventional administrator. She leaves the work of agreements and gradual consolidation to Rhine, disappears when bored, and expects the Dark Congress to function between crises. Yet her absence does not amount to abandonment: Rhine says she returns whenever something important happens, and her willingness to enforce the coalition is what makes the political compromise durable. Her ancient memories also answer Lucien's questions about the Age of Mythology, the Boundless Ocean, and the time-space restrictions she helped create, turning her into a source of knowledge as well as military protection. (Chapters 781–782)

Coalition against Viken

When Douglas prepares to become a demigod, Alterna agrees to stop Viken from disrupting the attempt. Lucien and Fernando stage a false ritual in the World of Souls while Douglas makes the real advancement in Allyn. Alterna attacks Viken with the Sword of Origin and Destiny and forces him to devote himself to her instead of the ritual below. The battle does not defeat Viken, but it delays him until the Will of Abyss traps Maltimus and Douglas completes his transformation. Alterna's intervention thus helps create another demigod ally even though the Dark Congress initially cannot locate its supposedly unreliable president. (Chapters 788, 791–795)

Viken's later attempt to fuse Mountain Paradise with the primeval hell threatens every other demigod with permanent destruction. Alterna abandons what she is doing and enters the marvelous domain without negotiation, striking alongside Maltimus, Douglas, Fernando, Hathaway, and the other legendary experts. Her moonlight and black fire break Viken's Blessed Realm; when ordinary supernatural powers become unusable, she disperses into a dreamy silver moon to freeze the tide feeding his transformation. Even when Viken repeatedly restores his defenses or moves beyond the coalition's reach, Alterna continues attacking instead of retreating. (Chapters 812–820)

After Lucien reaches the demigod level and explains the flaw in Viken's path, Alterna helps turn the failed transformation into a final defeat. She, Douglas, and Maltimus protect the other legends from God's Arrival, and she strikes the weakened Viken with descending moonlight while Lucien prevents his escape. Viken is ultimately destroyed inside Lucien's cognitive world. Alterna survives the conflict, remains one of the world's active demigods, and is still treated as a power with whom both the Congress and the remaining supernatural factions must reckon. (Chapters 821–823)

Appearance and personality

Alterna most often manifests as a beautiful, androgynous young girl with long blond hair tied to one side, crimson eyes, and a silver longsword. When injured and recovering she is small enough to use that sword as a walking stick; in battle she appears as a hazy figure within a vast silver moon or descends with the moonlight itself. Her face is usually indifferent and her eyes cold, even while she performs an act of protection or gives someone a gift. Rhine explicitly says that Alterna has no inherent gender, so the feminine body and pronouns describe the form that characters perceive rather than a fixed biological identity. (Chapters 370, 415, 482, and 780)

Her speech is literal, brief, and disarmingly simple. She calls godhood “cheese,” turns a piece of Ramiro into unappetizing “beef jerky,” announces a continental political takeover in four words, and may disappear from state business because she is bored. These scenes make her seem innocent, but her actions show long patience and sharp judgment: she rejects incompatible power, times ambushes precisely, spares useful defeated rivals, and gives warnings or assistance before her beneficiaries understand the danger. Her strongest recurring appetite is directed at godhood and exceptionally powerful flesh, an urge she consciously restrains when those potential meals are allies or subjects. (Chapters 482–486 and 780–782)

Alterna is protective without being sentimental in ordinary human terms. She risks herself against the World of Souls, shelters inside Lucien while also shielding him, agrees to conceal Natasha, and accepts the danger of Viken's final transformation as a collective problem. At the same time, she allows allies to bear real risk and does not explain more than she considers necessary. The result is a relationship style based on decisive intervention, repayment, and remembered obligation rather than reassurance or continuous companionship. (Chapters 415–418, 486–506, 644, and 812–823)

Primordial power and abilities

Alterna is a natural-born demigod rather than a sorcerer, cleric, or knight. Her power is tied to the Silver Moon, darkness, and an existence that is closer to the world's high-dimensional structure than ordinary life, but the corpus also establishes that this state is incomplete. She is exceptionally difficult to destroy and can contest manufactured demigods directly, yet the material world limits how fully and how long she can manifest away from her native basis. (Chapters 370, 416, 782, and 795)

Deathless Silver Moon and manifestation

Alterna's life is bound to the silver moon and darkness. Rhine states that even if she is killed, she draws on them to resurrect; when God's Arrival apparently makes “the moon fall,” the moon remains in the sky and Rhine can sense that her wounds are severe but not fatal. This endurance does not mean instant recovery. Damage from another demigod or God's Arrival can reduce her rank, force prolonged sleep, and leave her dependent on compatible power sources. Her latest demonstrated state is again that of an active demigod after multiple recoveries. (Chapters 417, 877–878, 482–506, and 812–823)

The restrictions created at the end of the Age of Mythology prevent her from walking the main material world freely. She ordinarily appears through a vampire summoning, the silver moon, an attached trace of her air, or a temporary projection. Rhine's ritual can call her through moonlight even when Dracula blocks the visible moon, and the air left in Lucien's hand lets Rhine summon her into the Chamber of Immortality. A full or nearly full arrival is vastly stronger than an ordinary projection, while a projection can still escort allies, suppress another demigod's intent, and make opponents reconsider combat. (Chapters 415–416, 644, 782, and 795)

Moonlight, black fire, and the Sword of Origin and Destiny

Alterna turns moonlight into both a medium of arrival and a direct attack. Through Lucien she produces a slash bright enough to split Dracula and drive him away; on her own she descends as a silver moon, floods domains with cold light, and burns through holy defenses with black fire. Her power can function through a summoning imprint and can remain effective against altered time and space, as shown when Danisos slows the battlefield but cannot stop the sword embedded in his back. The text demonstrates these effects but does not reduce them to a spell model or an activation formula. (Chapters 415, 780, 791–793, and 812–813)

The silver longsword called the Sword of Origin and Destiny is her signature weapon and is wreathed in black flame when fully active. Symbols flow from it into Danisos, producing a wound that his enormous life force cannot quickly heal; the strike severs flesh and wing, breaks his resistance, and allows Alterna to reduce his body. Against Viken, the same fire consumes sections of Blessed Realm and forces new defenses. The sword remains equipment-mediated power even though it is inseparable from her public image, and the corpus does not establish that every effect of her moonlight requires it. (Chapters 780–781, 791–793, and 812–813)

Godhood absorption and suppression

Compatible godhood and the fragments of high-dimensional beings accelerate Alterna's recovery. She consumes the Lord of Underworld's godhood and the death-and-resurrection component of Asin's, yet rejects Asin's beauty, love, and morning-star aspects when they threaten conflict with her existing nature. Her selection shows that absorption is conditional rather than an unlimited ability to steal any domain. Taking in the World of Souls' fragments is harder: their power repeatedly fights back, freezes or distorts the host around her, and requires Pale Justice to help suppress the outbreaks before digestion is complete. (Chapters 482–490 and 501–506)

While attached to Lucien, Alterna extends a demigod's will through his left hand. Divine commands fail against it, false gods become sluggish before its innate supremacy, godhood-derived defenses break under physical blows, and a surveillance specter is kept hidden until Lucien can remove it. The hand is still only a carrier: when Alterna is weak, the Lord of War defeats it and Congus can threaten the host, while Lucien and Natasha must provide protection during digestion. Once recovered, Alterna can use the attachment to hide their destiny tracks and move them across the alternate dimension. (Chapters 483–506)

Space, perspective, and primordial knowledge

Alterna's arrival briefly allows Lucien to perceive the world from a perspective of branching possibilities, a view Fernando considers available only near the truth of the world. Her greatest ancient feat is more concrete: with the sacrifice of allied half-awake existences, she twists space and time so that the stable passages among worlds are severed. That effect still shapes the Dark Mountain Range, the Boundless Ocean, and the corresponding geography of the World of Souls. It required exceptional conditions and collective sacrifice and is not shown as an attack she can casually repeat. (Chapters 415–416, 782, and 791)

Her memories cover the origins of magical creatures, false gods, primordial powers, and the boundaries between dimensions. The earliest memories are dreamlike and may be distorted, a limitation Rhine explicitly warns Lucien about. Once fully awake, however, her testimony explains phenomena that generations of sorcerers could not interpret and helps Lucien connect the strange geometry of the world with its ancient wars. This is practical strategic knowledge, not omniscience: she misjudges the pope's capacity for a second God's Arrival and does not explain the Chamber of Immortality on sight. (Chapters 644, 782, and 876–878)

• Lucien Evans: Lucien completes Rhine's summoning, shelters Alterna during her weakest recovery, and finds compatible powers for her to consume. Alterna in turn protects him from Dracula, the World of Souls, hidden surveillance, false gods, Congus, and later demigod threats; their alliance develops through repeated repayment rather than formal allegiance.
• Rhine: Rhine is Alterna's descendant, interpreter, and principal summoner. She entrusts him with ancient memories and lets him translate her terse decisions into diplomacy, while he treats service to the Primordial Ancestor as both a blood obligation and an active political partnership.
• Maltimus: Alterna and Maltimus are primordial peers whose interests alternate between rivalry and cooperation. She ambushes one of his projections and helps limit his plans, yet both unite with Douglas when Viken's ascent threatens every demigod.
• Viken: Viken is Alterna's most dangerous manufactured-demigod opponent. She opposes his interference with Douglas's advancement and joins the final coalition against his attempted rise to true godhood, while his access to God's Arrival remains one of the few powers shown capable of severely wounding her.
• Douglas: Alterna helps protect Douglas's advancement because an additional reliable demigod improves the balance against Viken. Douglas later fights beside her against Viken and recognizes her survival of God's Arrival as proof that even the Church's greatest power has limits.
• Natasha Violet: Alterna accepts Natasha's protection during the dangerous digestion of the World of Souls' fragments, conceals her from pursuit, and allows Pale Justice to suppress outbreaks. Their cooperation is mediated through Lucien but repeatedly saves all three of them.
