Hellen

Hellen is a grand arcanist, a legendary specialist in ice-and-snow magic, and the senior figure behind the Cabin of Palmeira. Credited with the law of energy conservation and the promotion of calculus, she joins extreme-cold research to battlefield magic and strategic responsibility. Her reserved public manner disguises a consuming curiosity: even when new experiments might destabilize her cognitive world and halt her advancement, she prefers knowing the result to remaining safely ignorant.

Biography

Energy, calculus, and extreme cold

Hellen is introduced through the accomplishments that made her one of the Congress's grand arcanists: the discovery of the law of energy conservation, work advancing calculus, and command of the ice-and-snow field. She participates in the theoretical correspondence provoked by Lucien Evans's thermal-radiation formula, pressing past a usable result toward the law behind it. When given Lucien's sealed helium paper, she increases the pressure on liquid helium, solidifies it, and brings ice-and-snow research to within one degree of absolute zero. She then personally makes the Ice & Snow Medal awarded for the breakthrough. Her response establishes a recurring pattern: she converts a theoretical opening into an experiment and then into a concrete magical application or research tool. (Chapters 173, 337–340, and 375)

Hellen's public brevity can make her appear indifferent, but her priorities are exact rather than empty. She speaks little outside magic and arcana and seldom attends cultural ceremonies because she would rather study. Among familiar colleagues she is more conversational, and her private attention remains fixed on questions that expose gaps in current mathematics or physical theory. The side story named for her crystallizes this trait by portraying a snow-elf-like young arcanist so absorbed in making limits, continuity, derivatives, and infinitesimals self-consistent that she barely notices an admirer until he claims competence in calculus. Legendary battles and defense of the Congress

During the Church's assault on the Congress, Hellen blocks Saint Maria and holds her own against a saint cardinal despite the suppressive effects of Paradise on Earth. When the Church's fighters try to herd the grand arcanists together, she coordinates with Fernando, Hathaway, and Oliver: Fernando contains their enemies, Hellen and Oliver cast Space Shackle, and Hathaway prepares the decisive attack. Hellen also freezes Varantine and time around him long enough to remove him from the immediate exchange. The trap cannot injure or hold him indefinitely, but the short interruption is sufficient for the larger tactic, demonstrating that her battlefield value lies as much in control and timing as in destructive cold. After the battle, Hellen repeatedly takes responsibility for Allyn's security. She activates defenses when unexplained cognitive-world phenomena disturb the city, helps open the sealed Land of Truth, verifies the neutron experiment that secures Lucien's grand-arcanist recognition, and serves long rotations guarding the headquarters. These duties impose a real research cost, yet she treats safeguarding the Congress as part of her office rather than a reason to abandon study. The Highest Council also relies on her to watch dangerous departures and control pivots within the Allyn magic tower. (Chapters 568–582, 715, and 735–736)

Rebuilding theory through successive revolutions

The gravity crisis tests Hellen's respect for authority without making her surrender independent judgment. Douglas's doubts alarm her because she respects him deeply, but she first secures Allyn rather than panicking. Lucien's geometric treatment of gravity exceeds the mathematics she has recently studied; she says candidly that she recognizes every symbol without understanding the whole, then decides to catch up on the missing issues of Nature. She joins the effort to verify neutrons and continues into the new alchemy and quantum mechanics instead of protecting her status by avoiding difficult fields. (Chapters 570–576 and 602–666)

Her research then feeds back into both magic and particle theory. Lucien's proposed magnetic and laser traps offer a way to study states close to absolute zero and may explain questions raised by her legendary snow spells. She and Hathaway establish a major system for crystal research, and Hellen works with Oliver to extend Lucien's equation to another class of microscopic particles. Yet she does not accept every interpretation: she rejects a simplistic observer-centered explanation with other senior arcanists and keeps looking for alternatives after disruptive experiments. Northland crisis and the late strategic order

When the wounded Will of Abyss attempts to arrive in the northland, Hellen is guarding Allyn but immediately activates an emergency plan and proposes a force strong enough to intervene without being annihilated. As the leading legend of the Cabin of Palmeira and de facto ruler of the threatened region, she volunteers to go herself, preventing an argument over who should accept the risk. At the site she watches Lucien's version of Snow Goddess's Forgiveness freeze the bloody gate and studies its effect even during the emergency. The resulting mission also draws her into the Congress's strategy of using artificial planets, open arcana, and controlled technological competition against the Church. (Chapters 735–739)

Hellen remains part of the group studying demigod advancement and accepts the cognitive-world route after Douglas demonstrates it. Before the final experimental broadcast, she warns that a shattered understanding can stall power even without exploding a cognitive world, then chooses to witness the results anyway. At the confrontation's end she becomes so absorbed by the arcana trick revealed overhead that even Natasha cannot draw her attention back to Viken. The comic moment is consistent with her entire career: enemies and ceremony recede once a new fact about the world demands explanation. (Chapters 739, 796–799, and 818–822)

Appearance and personality

Hellen usually wears a white magic robe. Her skin is described as fair as ice, becoming nearly bloodless under strain. The side story named for her presents a delicate, snow-elf-like young woman with clear, ice-like hair and eyes, blue lips, and an appearance that makes an observer mistake her for someone far less formidable than her questions reveal. The main narrative also repeatedly associates her manifested power with an illusionary world built from snow. (Chapters 570, 572, 739, and 852)

She is quiet, focused, and outwardly cool, but not emotionless. Hellen speaks most freely among people she knows and shows visible passion when a discovery touches her field. She respects Douglas without treating him as infallible, acknowledges mathematical gaps without embarrassment, and is willing to risk stalled advancement for a decisive experiment. In emergencies she is calm, practical, and personally responsible; in research she is relentless enough to ignore conversation, entertainment, and even the apparent final enemy when a better question is available. Magic, abilities, and skills

Hellen's capabilities combine legendary ice-and-snow sorcery, spatial control, a snow-based demiplane and cognitive world, and top-level arcana research. Her most powerful spells are not effortless expressions of cold: the text distinguishes models she once had to construct by spiritual power from later attempts to understand their arcana mechanisms.

Legendary ice-and-snow magic

Snow Goddess's Anger is one of Hellen's defining legendary spells. The corpus states that she originally had to construct it by force because the arcana basis of high-level ice magic was incomplete. That method lets a sufficiently powerful sorcerer use the spell, but it makes the model harder to learn and prevents the effect from reaching the efficiency available through deeper theoretical understanding. Lucien's later work on lasers, magnetic traps, and microscopic motion is therefore directly useful to Hellen's attempt to explain and refine her legendary cold. (Chapters 663–666)

Snow Goddess's Forgiveness produces cold close to absolute zero through a structure involving electric currents and lasers. At the northland gate it freezes air, trees, supernatural fire, and the gate itself into lifeless darkness. Its effect can also be disrupted: when used against Lucien, the heat, energy storm, magnetic field, and lasers within Atomic Universe distort its binding structure and trigger its cold prematurely. Hellen later exchanges this spell with Lucien for Silent Blue, showing that it is teachable to another qualified legendary sorcerer rather than an unshareable innate gift. (Chapters 736 and 807)

Hellen can also freeze a saint cardinal together with the surrounding air, holy light, and apparent time. Against Varantine the control is temporary and cannot injure him inside the trap, so she uses it to buy a tactically decisive interval rather than claim a victory the spell cannot deliver. Her manifested cognitive world appears as an illusion built from snow, and spreading her spiritual power together with her demiplane lets that half-solidified world interfere with reality. Space control and coordinated combat

Hellen casts Space Shackle with Oliver to crystallize and seal distorted space around multiple saints while Hathaway prepares a larger spell. Maintaining the shackle while occupying Varantine shows that she can divide attention across control tasks at legendary scale. Even so, the spell is a coordinated containment measure, not proof that she can permanently imprison every peer; the saints strain the barrier, and the Congress's team still has to retreat when the strategic situation changes. Her combat judgment is similarly collaborative. She holds assigned enemies, shifts position to support allies, recognizes when a few seconds are enough, and participates in layered plans rather than trying to win every duel alone. Outside battle, that same control expertise supports Allyn's defense, demiplane communication, emergency deployment, and the opening or securing of blocked spaces. (Chapters 557–568 and 735–737)

Arcana, mathematics, and experimental research

Hellen's arcana foundation includes energy conservation, calculus, extreme-temperature physics, crystals, and microscopic theory. She can solidify helium under increased pressure, design and craft a high-level Ice & Snow Medal, verify major elemental experiments, and use research on matter to revisit spell structures. Her work with Hathaway on crystals and with Oliver on relativistic microscopic equations shows that her later career is not confined to the field that made her famous. Her limitations are explicit and productive. Advanced geometry initially leaves her behind, the arcana mechanism of her strongest ice spell is incomplete, and the microscopic domain repeatedly forces her to revise expectations. Rather than conceal those limits, she studies missing mathematics, designs experiments, and separates a reproducible result from the interpretation placed on it. At the supplied endpoint, she remains a legendary combatant and a working grand arcanist whose next improvements depend on explaining, not merely overpowering, the world. • Douglas: Hellen deeply respects the president and his arcana authority, but does not collapse when he doubts his own theory. She later works with him on the Congress's strategic and demigod questions.
• Fernando: Fernando and Hellen are long-term colleagues whose different temperaments conceal comparable intensity. They exchange research, coordinate in legendary combat, share responsibility for Allyn, and argue or joke without weakening their trust.
• Hathaway: Hathaway is Hellen's research collaborator and battlefield ally. Their crystal work creates a broad new system, while Hellen's control magic helps create openings for Hathaway's most dangerous spells.
• Oliver: Oliver complements Hellen in space control and later joins her in extending microscopic equations. They work effectively despite his flamboyance and her reserve.
