Hathaway is a grand arcanist, the Lord of Elements, and one of the formative figures behind both the Congress of Magic and modern elemental arcana. Born Yaroran Hathaway Hoffenberg, she turns an early passion for mathematics into foundational work on calculus, a new definition of elements, atomic theory, and later nuclear research. Her restrained speech and nearly expressionless manner conceal fierce intellectual curiosity, loyalty to her family, and a willingness to abandon even her own most influential model when experiment proves it inadequate. Biography

The Hoffenberg prodigy and the birth of arcana

Hathaway is the only daughter of Ludwig, the deceased youngest son of King Williamson Hoffenberg, and grows up under the special protection of the grandfather who transferred much of his love for Ludwig to her. Her household initially tries to cultivate her as a knight despite her poor physical coordination. As a child she treats carrying an oversized sword as a mission and refuses to release it even when it repeatedly prevents her from standing. Her stubbornness impresses her guardians, but an encounter with Douglas and Fernando begins redirecting that determination: Douglas tells her to distinguish persistence from persisting in error, while both sorcerers discover that the taciturn girl becomes animated and confident when solving mathematics. The meeting gives the persecuted Union of Sorcerers a possible link to the Hoffenberg court and gives Hathaway teachers equal to her appetite for mathematics. Douglas is secretly assigned to assess her magical gifts and teach her, while Fernando sends books and maintains a decade-long correspondence. Hathaway does not remain merely their pupil. She contributes decisively to the development of calculus and eventually writes mathematics beyond Fernando's ability, forcing him to regard the former child as an equal. Her study also becomes an act of personal choice against the role prepared for her: she searches the royal library for the destroyed Will of Elements' records, learns magic in secret, and reaches at least the fifth circle before Fernando sees her again. After a disastrous revolt kills many senior sorcerers, Hathaway hides Douglas in a Hoffenberg manor and brings his Mathematical Principles of Magical Philosophy to the grieving Fernando. She cannot find conventional words of comfort, but the book and her quiet insistence help him recover the will to continue. Hathaway then studies the new account of nature alongside Douglas and Fernando, supports the impoverished Congress with money and safe facilities, and reestablishes the Will of Elements. Her purpose is organizational as well as scholarly: she wants the Will to demonstrate how older groups can enter a shared Congress without losing their specialist communities, anticipating the later transition from a loose alliance to a unified institution. Grand arcanist, elementalist, and family guardian

By the main narrative, Hathaway has become a member of the Highest Council and one of the authorities who redefined and categorized elements, explained elemental spells through arcana, and discovered seventeen rare elements. Her work carries institutional power. She joins the effort to analyze druidic nature magic, shields sensitive research from both the Church and predatory colleagues, and keeps Lucien's authorship of the Miracle Experiment secret until he is strong enough for public credit. When she finally reveals that authorship, she does so to secure his deserved review-board standing rather than to claim any part of the discovery herself. (Chapters 173, 212–234, and 350–351)

Her relationship to Lucien Evans begins before they meet. Hathaway apparently identifies the mysterious “Professor” but does not expose him, partly because of his connection to Natasha and partly because his work belongs to the Congress. She later treats him as a younger colleague whose dangerous ideas must be tested rather than suppressed. Most importantly, she damages her own atomic theory by discovering isotopes. That choice prepares elementalists for the electron and demonstrates the principle she learned as a child: loyalty to facts requires recognizing when persistence has become error. She continues questioning every replacement model, including the orbits and energy levels in new alchemy, and accepts unfamiliar mathematical systems by applying them to concrete atomic problems. Hathaway's reserve softens most visibly around the Hoffenberg family. Natasha calls her “Granny,” relies on her demiplane as a secure route between Allyn and Rentato, and trusts her protection in political and personal crises. Hathaway watches over Natasha's succession, warns and supports her through assassination threats, and attends her wedding as both family elder and top-legendary guard. Her concern is practical rather than sentimental in expression. She attempts to extend the dying Patrick's life but lacks the necromantic method needed for his unusually weak body; the failure defines a real limit to her breadth without diminishing the effort she makes for him. Project Mushroom Cloud and the new political order

When Sard offers the Congress a chance to remove the South Church from Holm, Hathaway and Fernando hear him without mistaking opportunity for trust. She helps block surveillance, tests his timetable against the Congress's likely advances, and asks directly whether Fernando believes the proposal. The pair bring the decision into the Congress's collective leadership and prepare for betrayal as well as cooperation. Hathaway's work on atomic theory then becomes a battlefield instrument: after reaching the peak of legendary, she joins the coordinated plan to trap the Church's saints and destroy their capacity to reinforce Rentato. During the battle, Hathaway holds two saints inside Element Paradise while Luxury Cracking and Elements Resolve tear apart divine protections, legendary equipment, and even parts of their bodies. Her role is not an isolated display of power but the key to a year of preparation by seventeen legendary sorcerers. While Fernando's Storm Barrier confines the targets and the other grand arcanists keep interference away, Hathaway completes the extended casting of Eternal Blaze. The explosion breaks the Church's position; she then protects Rentato from the demigod battle's aftermath and disintegrates the damaged transmission circles so they cannot be restored. Her actions help end the South Church's rule on that side of the Storm Strait and make the Congress an open political power rather than a tolerated refuge. (Chapters 557–565)

Victory gives Hathaway new civil responsibilities. Douglas assigns her to coordinate with the reformed Holmish Church, and she shares the defense of the Nekso Palace, the royal magic tower, and the Will of Elements. These duties continue her founding vision: specialist organizations and secular authority remain distinct, but their strength is integrated through the Congress. She also remains a deterrent against Kritonia and other enemies who might exploit Natasha's rule, making her family loyalty part of Holm's new strategic balance. (Chapters 565–576)

Quantum research, nuclear engineering, and the final crisis

Hathaway responds to the quantum revolution with disciplined caution. She rejects speculation that lacks an experimental problem, yet supports models once evidence gives them a testable basis. She is among the Congress's strongest mathematicians, helps prove the equivalence of wave and matrix mechanics, studies the noncommutative structure behind the latter, and develops a simple hypothesis about proton and neutron behavior from scattering data. Her restraint is therefore methodological rather than conservative: she prefers a claim narrow enough to confront experiment and will change direction when the result demands it. Her late collaboration with Fernando turns reverse-engineered fission magic into usable infrastructure. Their early reactors explode because their account of neutron behavior is incomplete, so Hathaway investigates reactions under different conditions, brings Raventi and Morris into the work, and helps produce a stable reactor that directly powers Allyn. She then pursues miniaturized fission devices, magic-crystal applications of quantum field theory, and ultimately controllable fusion. The public achievements do not erase risk: the design still contains unknown hazards, only legendary researchers may safely work on it, and fusion remains unsolved at the supplied endpoint. Hathaway also bears strategic responsibility during the attempts to transcend legendary rank. While supervising Allyn, she authorizes the city's defenses with Brook and observes Douglas's dangerous demigod ritual so the Congress can learn from it and protect the attempt. When Viken later tries to become a true god, she leaves Allyn under Brook's protection and joins Douglas, Fernando, and Vicente in the direct confrontation. She helps sustain the coalition through attacks no individual legend could withstand, survives Viken's defeat, and remains part of the research community afterward. Appearance and personality

As a child, Hathaway has clear, cold silver eyes and a small, poorly coordinated body that contrasts with the giant sword she insists on carrying. In adulthood she is described as a gorgeous woman with silver-gray eyes and a beautiful, strict face that rarely shows emotion. She may wear an ordinary red court dress when acting within the Hoffenberg household, while in battle her still expression and level gaze remain recognizable even amid legendary magic. The corpus does not provide a consistent detailed account of her hair or usual magical clothing, so those features remain unspecified. (Chapters 863–864, 561, and 893–894)

Hathaway is taciturn, direct, and often silent whenever another person can speak adequately. Complicated thoughts may require her to combine speech with writing, and her first attempts at comfort can sound more like a technical conclusion than sympathy. This is not indifference. Her eyes, small gestures, and actions reveal excitement over mathematics, grief for lost allies, joy at Douglas's advancement, and gentleness toward Natasha. Her defining traits are stubborn resolve and empirical self-correction. The child who refuses to drop a sword grows into a scholar capable of striking down her own atomic theory, because she learns that perseverance must answer to evidence. Magic, abilities, and skills

Hathaway is an elementalist, grand arcanist, and top legendary sorcerer whose magic unites elemental decomposition, atomic theory, forceful battlefield control, space travel, and large-scale defense. Her powers are especially dangerous to opponents who depend on enchanted equipment or layered magical effects. The progression record preserves her established main-era ranks together with the fifth-circle state disclosed by a late flashback, while leaving the intervening promotion chapters unassigned. Elemental theory and spellcraft

Hathaway's elemental magic rests on a reconstructed understanding of matter rather than the ancient practice of copying models. She redefines and classifies elements, identifies rare examples, explains many elemental spells, and adapts those findings into laboratory and field magic. Hathaway's Collecting Spell separates small quantities of a chosen element and becomes standard in advanced laboratories, although very low concentrations still demand costly supporting circles. Her demiplane, Element Paradise, reflects this specialization as a starry domain filled with different elemental colors and can be brought onto a battlefield to contain legendary enemies. Elements Resolve is her unique legendary spell and a direct expression of that mastery. It disintegrates a target into constituent elements, damaging bodies, enchantments, and constructed systems. Against saints, it works with Luxury Cracking to destroy protections and physical parts; after the Rentato battle, Hathaway uses it to break the already damaged transmission complex beyond restoration. Access is not entirely private—qualified members of the Will of Elements can exchange contributions to study it—but the spell demands legendary elemental understanding, and its public descriptions do not establish that every material can be resolved without resistance. Luxury Cracking and defensive control

Luxury Cracking is Hathaway's signature anti-magic attack. It is an advanced form of the ninth-circle Cracking spell that strips a wide area of magical effects and can shatter legendary items, with the chance depending partly on the relative power involved. It does not discriminate safely between nearby allies and enemies, which constrains its use in a crowded formation. In the Rentato battle it breaks multiple divine effects and a saint's item while weakening several opponents; later testimony treats Hathaway's version as the standard Lucien has not yet matched. Her defensive and control magic complements that destructive specialty. Elemental Protection gathers multicolored lights into a shield broad enough to cover Rentato against a demigod battle's aftermath. In the World of Souls she resists Advanced Time Stop better than most legends and uses her knowledge of both modern and ancient spell structures to suppress two legendary specters, although doing so occupies her attention and prevents her from immediately aiding Natasha. Hathaway also controls Allyn's defense circles when assigned to supervise the city, using institutional fortifications rather than presenting every defense as innate power. Eternal Blaze, fission, and magical engineering

Hathaway can cast Eternal Blaze, an atomic explosion whose preparation converts theoretical knowledge and carefully accumulated material into extreme heat and energy. The Rentato casting requires a long chant, a prepared energy sphere, seventeen legendary contributors over a year, and teammates who hold five saints within its range; the material quantity is deliberately reduced because full power could disrupt space, time, and causality. The spell's enormous scale therefore comes with severe preparation, range, and friendly-fire constraints. Hathaway later reverse-engineers it and Atomic Fission to identify neutrons as necessary components of their magic models. (Chapters 561–562 and 576)

Her engineering work with Fernando, Raventi, and Morris turns that violent reaction into a controllable reactor. Magic circles directly convert fission energy into power for Allyn, but early designs explode, radioactive wreckage remains dangerous, and unknown reactions require continued experimental study. The eventual reactor is stable enough for practical use, not proven harmless. Miniaturization and fusion are later goals, while applications to magic crystals and artificial intelligence remain developing research rather than finished personal abilities. Mathematics, investigation, and spatial travel

Hathaway co-founds calculus and remains among the Congress's strongest mathematical specialists. She uses that ability to simplify spell construction, compare theoretical systems, derive consequences from scattering experiments, and test new microscopic models through calculation. Her investigative discipline is similarly important: she recognizes patterns in the “Professor” identity, helps analyze nature divine power, detects weaknesses in atomic theory, and insists that attractive speculation be tied to observations. These are professional skills rather than magical effects, but they repeatedly determine which spells, safeguards, and research programs become possible. Her legendary connection to her demiplane also gives her extraordinary travel and survival options. When trapped in Elks Maze, she wanders for ten years before using that connection and Space Drifting to force a route home over another five years. The feat demonstrates endurance and high-level spatial capability, not effortless navigation: unknown dimensions can sever normal contact, and even Hathaway needs years to escape. Her demiplane later serves as a secure route between the Holm Royal Magic Tower, Allyn, and protected family locations. (Chapters 380, 489, and 593)

• Douglas: Douglas recognizes Hathaway's mathematical talent as a child, becomes her private teacher, and treats her contributions to calculus as genuine collaboration. She later shelters him, helps build the Congress around his public arcana, and stands beside him through both his demigod advancement and the final conflict.
• Fernando: Fernando begins as a mocking but attentive informal teacher and eventually accepts Hathaway as his mathematical superior and scholarly equal. They collaborate on atomic theory, fission, reactors, strategy, and the protection of the Congress.
• Natasha Violet: Hathaway is Natasha's grandmotherly elder and one of her most dependable protectors. She provides secure travel, political backing, magical defense, and unusually visible warmth while respecting Natasha's own decisions as knight and queen.
• Lucien Evans: Hathaway protects Lucien's identity and research before he can safely claim it, then engages him as a colleague whose disruptive work must be tested rigorously. Their bond also grows through his marriage to Natasha and their shared elemental and quantum research.
• Sharp: Sharp is Hathaway's childhood knight teacher and guardian. Though he initially trains her with a sword and distrusts sorcerous influence, he permits her mathematical contact with Douglas and Fernando and later helps her shelter the Congress's founders.
• Oliver: Hathaway works with Oliver as a fellow grand arcanist and combat ally, but family loyalty makes her a severe critic of his treatment of Florencia. Their scientific cooperation continues despite that personal disapproval.
