Betty

Betty is a young archer who travels with her older sister Joanna and brother-in-law Simon. Hired to guard Lucien on the road to Korsor, she survives Baron Habearo's undead conspiracy and turns her admiration for the famous musician into a commitment to train seriously. (Chapters 137–151)

Biography

A dangerous commission and a musical aspiration

Betty begins the journey as the least experienced of the three guards and as an enthusiastic admirer of Lucien Evans, without realizing her client is the musician himself. Her inexperience makes her visibly curious in Habearo's castle and shaken by its horrors, but she does not abandon the group. She helps destroy the remaining husks, blinds the necromancer's owl with a bow shot, and follows Lucien's orders while he searches the laboratory. Afterward, Lucien explains the demanding routine of knight training; Betty's admiration gives her a reason to accept that progress will require boring, sustained work rather than a dramatic shortcut. In Korsor she learns Lucien's identity, attends the musicians' association, and leaves the commission with both a survived crisis and a clearer personal goal. (Chapters 137–151)

Betty later attends Lucien's Aalto concert with Joanna and Simon. The music recalls their home, childhood, and the frightening road through Djibouti, and she acknowledges that encouragement from a celebrated musician does not guarantee he will perform personally for her. She still chooses to keep it as motivation. When the three encounter the obituary for Lucien's staged death, the corpus leaves their later lives unresolved. (Chapters 293–307)

Appearance and personality

Betty is a young woman who carries a short bow. She is curious, emotionally expressive, musically enthusiastic, and initially naïve about both noble settings and supernatural violence. Fear and disgust affect her openly, but neither prevents her from acting when her companions need help. (Chapters 137–151 and 293)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Betty is a trained archer whose rank is slightly below the high-level knight squires Joanna and Simon. She can hit a flying undead owl in the eye under battlefield pressure and helps clear lesser husks, but she has no awakened Blessing in the supplied arc. Lucien's training advice establishes a possible path forward, not a confirmed later advancement. (Chapters 137, 144–148)
