Simon
Simon is Joanna's husband and Betty's brother-in-law, a high-level knight squire who works as a sword-and-shield guard. He protects Lucien's coach, fights the undead forces at Habearo's castle, and later pursues formal knight training with his family. The unrelated boy named Simon mentioned in Chapter 1 is not established as this character. (Chapters 137–151)
Biography
Guarding the road through Fogtown
Simon accepts the commission to escort Lucien Evans to Korsor because he and Joanna have a good professional reputation and the party can charge accordingly. On the road he drives off beasts without alarming the horses, demonstrating the control expected of a reliable guard rather than merely striking at whatever approaches. At Habearo's castle, Lucien assigns him to secure the upper floor and protect the noncombatants; after the main confrontation, Simon leaves the castle to deal with chaos in Fogtown caused by escaping husks. The decision extends his responsibility beyond the paying client to ordinary townspeople in immediate danger. Once the party survives, he listens to Lucien's knight-training methods and commits to sustained practice so that he and Joanna can awaken their Blessings and return home with recognized status. (Chapters 137–149)
Simon later shares the family's growing appreciation for music, attending Lucien's Aalto concert and revisiting memories of Djibouti through the performance. He and Joanna remain together, but the supplied corpus does not confirm whether either eventually awakens a Blessing. (Chapters 150–151 and 293–307)
Appearance and personality
Simon wears armor and carries the equipment suited to a sword-and-shield warrior. He is steady, hardworking, and less impulsive than Betty. He performs difficult travel in heat without complaint, evaluates what his companions observed, and treats Lucien's advice as a training commitment rather than an exciting promise. (Chapters 137–149)
Magic, abilities, and skills
As a high-level knight squire, Simon has enhanced physical conditioning but no demonstrated awakened blood power. His specialties are close defense, sword-and-shield fighting, controlling threats around a coach, and clearing lesser undead. He is not shown defeating the senior necromantic enemy directly, and his later advancement remains unconfirmed. (Chapters 137–149)
