Sir Charles
Sir Charles Whitbury is a veteran Cygnian tournament knight whose technical skill and deliberate showmanship make him the champion of Wistover's Royal joust. His victory also opens a path from decades of travelling for prize money toward a permanent role directing arena events.
Biography
The Royal Joust and Regional Alliances
Charles arrives after decades on the tournament circuit and complains that overly formal jousting has begun to feel like ritual rather than battle. He nevertheless treats performance as part of the craft. Against Sir Korath, he changes his shield angle at the last instant, lets the opposing lance slide away, and lands the decisive chest strike; against Sir Morton, he uses false high aims, repeated pressure on one armour point, and a feigned hesitation to control the match psychologically as well as physically. In the final against Sir Nallon, Charles remains mounted through punishing impacts, deflects a high attack, and preserves his points lead even when nearly lifted from the saddle. The victory earns him the championship trophy and confirms that his flamboyance rests on deep technical control. (Chapters 616 and 642–661)
Before the final, Jack Merlot and Dominic Wavemates begin recruiting Charles to direct events at Wistover's arena. Charles is proud enough that the offer must respect his status, but he discusses housing and an official advisory office rather than rejecting it. The prospective position would convert his knowledge of crowds and competition into stable work while allowing him to remain close to the sport that made his reputation. (Chapters 649–652)
Appearance and personality
Charles is a tall blond man over forty with a strong chin, sharp jaw, and slightly weathered features from years on the road. He sits tall and still in the saddle and cultivates the image of an ideal tournament knight. Loud, confident, and theatrical, he also understands his rivals well enough to acknowledge their chances and uses spectacle without losing competitive focus. (Chapters 616, 642, and 659)
Magic, skills, and craft
Charles specializes in jousting technique and showmanship. He controls lance height, extension, timing, body position, shield angle, and horse speed to create misses or concentrate repeated hits. He can draw back briefly to adjust after impact and recover while a shield is replaced. These feats are presented as trained skill and strength; the corpus does not identify a personal spell or formal progression. (Chapters 642 and 659–660)
