Ragnar Ironbeard

Ragnar Ironbeard is a Dwarf who leads the Innkeeper's Guild and holds an Elder's seat in the Brewmaster's Guild. He visits Wistover as part of a group of guild leaders assessing its growing economy and the opportunities for new taverns and inns.

Biography

Guild business and brewing ties in Wistover

Ragnar arrives with authority over both inns and brewing, giving him an obvious interest in the open tavern and inn sites that Castellan Julio can approve. He postpones a private business discussion while the visiting guild leaders address broader concerns with Dominic Wavemates, then tests Wistover's level-five magically created ale with professional skepticism and immediate enthusiasm. The visit leaves him interested enough in the city's hospitality trade to continue discussions rather than treating the available properties as routine expansion. (Chapters 758–760)

The formal visit develops into a reunion when Pops joins Ragnar in the kitchen and later at the forge. Ragnar's Dwarven tolerance leads him to underestimate what the human guests can drink, contributing to an excessively drunken night, but it also builds informal ties between guild craft, Wistover's smiths, and a prospective match involving the guild leader's son. His latest status is therefore both commercial and social: he remains a national guild leader while forming direct relationships inside the Duchy he may help supply with inns and brewing expertise. (Chapters 761–762)

Appearance and personality

Ragnar is an older Dwarf; the corpus gives no further stable physical description. He is skeptical when judging unfamiliar ale, enormously tolerant of alcohol, and quick to shift from formal guild business into jokes and convivial drinking. His absence from court is presented as customary rather than secretive. (Chapters 758–762)

Magic, skills, and craft

Ragnar's titles establish senior expertise in innkeeping and brewing, including authority over tavern and inn businesses. The corpus does not show him casting the ale-creation spell or brewing a batch directly, so Wistover's level-five ale demonstrates the product he evaluates rather than his personal magic. His directly shown skill is professional tasting informed by exceptional Dwarven alcohol tolerance, which also creates the practical limitation that he misjudges what human companions can safely consume. (Chapters 758–761)

Relationships

  • Dominic Wavemates: Ragnar evaluates Wistover's ale and business environment while discussing the Guild's potential role in new inns and taverns. (Chapters 758–760)

  • Pops: Ragnar and Pops turn the visit into an informal reunion and continue drinking at the forge after the formal meetings end. (Chapters 761–762)

Items

  • Level-five created ale: Ragnar samples and approves Wistover's magically produced ale, but it belongs to the manor's hospitality stock and is not his personal item. (Chapter 759)
