Millie
Millie is Wistover Manor's Garden Witch. A childhood head injury leaves her vulnerable to severe headaches and limits ordinary employment, but work under Tena's care gives her magic a safe, productive place in the Duchy's food and landscaping systems.
Biography
Recovery through Wistover's gardens
Millie lives with a protective ogre-blooded woman and her sons despite not being their kin, and recurring headaches keep her from working most days. When Colonel Wilkes eases the pain, Dominic Wavemates offers her paid work as Tena's assistant and the Duke's in-house Garden Witch. Millie accepts because she loves gardens, then uses selective weed-removal and rapid growth to make the manor's vegetables locally famous. Tena's supervision keeps her from overexerting herself, turning a precarious condition into a durable role without implying that the underlying injury has vanished. (Chapters 234–296)
Specialist nature magic
Millie's contribution expands from vegetables to coffee plants, landscaping, and estate-scale crop support. Her growth magic can mature crops in days, though bare rock remains unusable and Troll nature magic is faster at much greater energy cost. Much later, her attunement lets her confirm a pregnancy, but the household still seeks a suitably magical midwife for formal confirmation. These limits show a useful specialist rather than an all-purpose healer: Millie's latest demonstrated value remains sensitivity to living systems and accelerated cultivation. (Chapters 311, 349–351, 434, and 665)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives no detailed physical description of Millie. She commonly wears a dreamy smile, responds to gardens with childlike enthusiasm, and happily focuses on plants such as squash and coffee. Her earlier guardian treats her protectively because the old head injury affects both her health and behaviour. (Chapters 234, 295–296, and 311)
Magic, skills, and craft
Millie's Garden Witch magic can remove weeds while leaving edible plants, sustain or accelerate garden growth, and support landscaping. It works quickly enough to grow crops in days and can replenish hay faster than Jasmine cuts it, but it cannot create crops on bare rock; Trolls can force faster growth only by spending enormous energy. Her magic is also described as attuned to confirming pregnancy, though a specialist midwife is still considered necessary for confirmation. (Chapters 235, 241, 323, 349–351, 434, and 665)
Relationships
- Tena: Tena becomes Millie's head gardener, supervisor, and protector, structuring the work so her assistant does not overexert herself. (Chapters 234–235 and 294)
- Dominic Wavemates: Dominic offers Millie a garden and paid household position, then relies on her for the manor's food production and landscaping. (Chapters 234–296 and 351)
- Jasmine: Millie's magically renewed hay helps feed the animals but outpaces Jasmine's storage capacity, creating a practical limit that the stable must manage. (Chapter 323)
Items
- Seeds and exchanged fern: Millie trades loose seeds with another Witch and receives a small fern plant. They reflect her gardening work but are not named magical artifacts. (Chapter 296)
