Earl Tarleigh

Earl Tarleigh is the ruler of Port Tarleigh, a northern trade port whose accommodation of pirates gives both the city and its Earl a questionable reputation. His commercial reach makes him valuable to Cygnia's airship and shipping plans even when the Merchant's Guild objects to how openly he handles illicit traffic.

Biography

The Royal Joust and Regional Alliances

Tarleigh meets Dominic Wavemates while seeking Wistover's new airships for his port. He candidly explains that his father's entertainment businesses were meant to keep sailors and pirates manageable, acknowledging rather than denying the source of Port Tarleigh's reputation. When the Crown considers new trade infrastructure, he warns that replacing the Merchant's Guild requires hundreds of pages of route and export data and an international middleman, then asks to be placed near the top of the production list. His caution helps turn an attractive purchase into a broader trade plan using Tarleigh and Seaveton as opposite coastal way stations. (Chapters 687–695)

Heirs of Wistover and the World Dragon

Wistover later chooses Tarleigh to receive an airship because he can obtain difficult goods and will demonstrate the craft to visiting captains without needing to boast about himself. The plan succeeds in putting airship capacity at his port, but it also strengthens a trade system that accepts pirate cargo, normalizes it, and lets known pirates dock openly. The Guild asks Dominic to intervene while admitting that closing Tarleigh's harbour to them would displace the problem rather than eliminate it. Tarleigh's latest position is therefore commercially useful but deliberately morally ambiguous. (Chapters 716 and 758–760)

Appearance and personality

Tarleigh is an older man who first appears with two teenage boys. The corpus gives no further stable physical description. He speaks softly, takes notes during business, and is candid about his city's poor reputation. Others describe him as sociable and fond of gossip without being a braggart. (Chapters 687, 691, 694, and 716)

Magic, skills, and craft

The corpus does not establish personal magic or a formal progression for Tarleigh. His demonstrated skill is commercial administration: he understands port traffic, export data, international intermediaries, and how a new transport technology can connect regional markets. His access depends on ships, airships, captains, and permissive harbour policy rather than a named magical ability. (Chapters 693–694 and 716)

Relationships

  • Dominic Wavemates: Tarleigh seeks airships from Dominic and contributes port-trade knowledge to the Crown's plan. Dominic later becomes the intermediary whom the Guild asks to challenge Tarleigh's pirate policy. (Chapters 687–694 and 758–760)
  • Lord Blackwell: Blackwell supports giving Tarleigh an airship because his contacts and willingness to demonstrate it will spread the design among traders. (Chapter 716)
  • His father: Tarleigh attributes Port Tarleigh's entertainment district and accommodation of pirates to policies begun by his father. (Chapter 691)

Items

  • Wistover airship: Tarleigh seeks and later receives an airship for Port Tarleigh, using it in the port's shipping operations and as a demonstration for captains. (Chapters 687–694, 716, and 758)
