Rods from God

Rods from God is the common name for Arnold’s kinetic orbital bombardment weapon. Its demonstrated strike relies primarily on a very heavy accelerated rod and classical kinetic force, combining system-era materials and propulsion with a pre-system weapons concept rather than a conventional magical attack. History

Prima Guardian strike

Arnold developed the weapon from a concept that had interested him since childhood. He synthesized a long metal rod inspired by the weight-changing staff, added a coating that enabled spaceflight and reduced friction, and used thrusters to accelerate it over several dozen Earth orbits. Because the targeting system remained rudimentary and largely manual, Jake’s strike team had to hold Earth’s Prima Guardian in place while the projectile completed its approach. (Chapter 935)

The rod arrived during the second phase of the battle, turning airborne sand into glass and striking with more force than a dozen full Arcane Powershots. It destroyed over half the Guardian’s body, but the Guardian’s durability and vitality prevented the impact from killing or greatly weakening it. The weapon therefore changed the battle without functioning as a guaranteed one-shot solution. (Chapter 935)

Jake later cited the attack as evidence that familiar physics still worked after the system: the weapon was, at base, something extremely heavy moving extremely fast. Artemis qualified that conclusion by explaining that concepts and deeper laws can supersede the ordinary physical model, placing an upper limit on treating kinetic force as universally decisive. Abilities and properties

• Kinetic bombardment: The system produces force through the rod’s mass and extreme orbital velocity rather than through a conventional attack skill. Its observed impact vitrified sand and inflicted catastrophic physical damage. (Chapter 935)
• System-assisted construction: The rod uses synthesized metal inspired by another weight-altering weapon, a space-capable low-friction coating, and thrusters for repeated orbital acceleration. (Chapter 935)
• Long preparation: It requires multiple orbits to build speed and cannot be called down instantly. In the Prima Guardian fight, it only arrived in the second phase because of the required setup and travel. (Chapter 935)
• Targeting constraint: Arnold’s targeting was rudimentary and mostly manual, requiring allies to restrain the target and creating obvious collateral danger around the impact zone. (Chapter 935)
• Durability and conceptual limits: The strike failed to kill the Prima Guardian despite immense force, and later instruction established that higher concepts can override the expectations of ordinary physics. (Chapters 935, 1101)
