Roman
Roman is an independent elemental mage who meets Jake Thayne during the Treasure Hunt and later settles into Haven's adventuring circle with Felicia.
Biography
Treasure Hunt partnership and Haven
Roman joins Jake, Felicia, and a Court assassin in opening a puzzle Vault, arguing loudly but ultimately accepting a fair division of the spoils and receiving a staff he cannot yet equip. He then chooses to continue adventuring with Felicia and asks whether Haven welcomes recruits because his former life was itinerant. At the Auction he has reached the staff's requirement, openly embraces his partnership with Felicia, and helps Jake bypass hostile bidding without hesitation. Settled near Haven, he contributes powerful elemental area attacks to repeated Undergrowth expeditions, turning a chance Vault alliance into a dependable combat and social partnership. (Chapters 318–319, 361–371, 387, and 426)
Appearance and personality
Roman is a large, bearded man who wears a robe and carries his elemental staff once able to meet its requirements. His speech is blunt and colloquial, and he is loud, teasing, and shameless about his relationship with Felicia. Under the jokes, he is cooperative: he accepts group decisions, follows urgent requests immediately, trades honestly, and adjusts his concentration when work begins. (Chapters 318 and 361–371)
Path, class, and abilities
Roman is an elemental mage who combines the common elements rather than specializing in one. He advances from level 118, below the requirement of his newly won staff, to level 125 by the Auction and is then able to wield it. The corpus does not name his class evolution beyond that specialization. (Chapters 318 and 361)
- Elemental spellcasting: He demonstrates fire magic casually and later uses high-output area spells that combine frost and flame. In the Undergrowth, these attacks control groups of Deepdwellers and Fungalmancers, while concentrated elemental blasts provide major damage. He performs best when allies keep enemies from chasing or striking him, a limitation he states himself. (Chapters 318 and 387)
- Staff-assisted casting: The Staff of Elemental Confluence amplifies fire, water, earth, and air magic and provides stored elemental mana and a combined blast. Roman obtains it before meeting its level requirement, then progresses until he can carry and use it; the resulting power is item-assisted rather than evidence of an innate four-element reserve. (Chapters 318 and 361)
- Party role: Roman supplies ranged pressure and area control while Felicia operates in melee. Their complementary ranges help an otherwise lightly protected dungeon party, though Miranda notes that the group still relies heavily on Sultan when facing the dungeon's stronger encounters. (Chapters 387 and 426)
Relationships
- Felicia: Roman invites her to keep traveling with him after the Vault. Their effective partnership becomes romantic, and he openly calls her his girlfriend while their contrasting personalities—his exuberance and her reserve—remain part of their dynamic.
- Jake Thayne: Jake meets Roman as a temporary Vault ally, grants him the elemental staff, and invites him to Haven. Roman later helps Jake at the Auction immediately and without probing the request.
- Miranda Wells: Miranda formally welcomes Roman and Felicia to Haven and later raids the Undergrowth alongside them, coming to value their combat contribution.
