Robert Thayne is the father of Jake Thayne and Caleb Thayne. Rather than pursuing a combat Path after the system arrives, he applies his pre-system engineering expertise to the design and growth of Skyggen.

Biography

Separation, reunion, and rebuilding

Robert first appears in Jake’s memory of an ordinary family gathering, grounding the family life the Tutorial interrupted. Jake later briefly believes that Robert and the rest of the family died, but the statement that prompts that conclusion is a deliberate fake-out; Robert survived, reunited with his relatives, and helped prepare administrators for the first World Congress. When Jake finally sits down with the family again, Robert’s new roles as survivor and grandfather do not erase the familiar, teasing household dynamic. (Chapters 100, 122, 211, 354, 356)

Across later reunions, Robert remains concerned about both sons without trying to direct their Paths.
