Matteo

Matteo is a former organized-crime assassin who enters the Court of Shadows after losing its Tutorial contest for the title of Judge.

Biography

The assassin called M

Before integration, Matteo worked as the killer “M” and retained little besides his grandfather’s piano. He turned on his criminal superior when the organization expanded into human trafficking, but his coup ended with trafficked women being shot and left him with another burden rather than a clean moral victory. In the Tutorial he chose Light Warrior, entered Umbra’s darkness-aligned trials, and paired an assassin’s Path with a piano-centered musician profession. (Chapter 637 confirms his later Court role; Standalone Intermission 4, Part 1 supplies this origin)

Defeat, allegiance, and service

Matteo defeated Nadia and reached the final contest for the Judge position, where Caleb’s Tenlucis legacy overcame him. He accepted the result without pleading or betrayal and became Caleb’s second-in-command, later training at the Order, outperforming Caleb in a Colosseum setting through superior pre-system combat experience, leading Court forces alongside Nadia, and returning to the piano in a public concert. (Chapters 637, 752, 932, and 1076; Standalone Intermission 4, Part 2)

Appearance and personality

Matteo is a fit human man who habitually wore a suit before integration; the corpus supplies no surname and records him saying that he never had one. He is controlled, pragmatic, and lethal, but not indiscriminately cruel. His rebellion against trafficking, disciplined acceptance of defeat, and continued attachment to the piano show a personal code beneath his professional detachment.

Path, class, and abilities

  • Darkness-aligned assassin: Umbra’s trials redirected his nominal Light Warrior foundation into darkness. He conceals his signature, uses stealth and danger-sensing abilities, stores weapons in a shadow vault, and fights with paired handguns and daggers.
  • Dark Handguns of Umbra: The uncommon pistols create dark-mana ammunition rather than depending on mundane cartridges. Their output is still tied to Matteo’s energy and accuracy, and they did not let him overcome Caleb’s legacy in their decisive duel.
  • Musician profession: Piano practice grants sound and perception control. Matteo can suppress the noise of his own movement and weapon fire or release sound-based effects; the profession complements assassination rather than replacing his combat class.
  • Boosts and finishers: Dark Infusion raises Agility, Strength, and Intelligence, while Dark Tempest Strike and Domain of Shadows expand his burst and battlefield control. Their exact costs are not quantified, but the final with Caleb shows that stronger legacy effects and superior counters can break through the full toolkit.
  • Latest state: Matteo remains an active Court officer and accomplished pianist, with leadership and pre-system fighting skill supplementing his system abilities.

Relationships

  • Caleb Thayne defeats Matteo fairly and then earns his service. Their relationship develops from rivals for the Judge title into commander and trusted second-in-command.
  • Nadia first opposes Matteo in the Tutorial and later trains and commands Court forces beside him, turning a competitive history into professional cooperation.
