Fairleigh
Fairleigh is the current Patriarch of the Nalkar House, one of the vampire families aligned with the Order of the Malefic Viper. He represents both its political authority and its intense commitment to preserving lineage history.
Biography
The Nalkar relic and a new-universe alliance
Fairleigh personally receives Jake Thayne when Jake offers an ancient Nalkar alchemy token recovered from Yalsten. He tests Jake’s knowledge and motives, first downplays the token’s practical value, then admits that its Records and family history make it invaluable. Their negotiation becomes an exchange of the relic for alchemical materials, and Fairleigh honors the bargain with resources chosen for Jake’s blood and poison work. The meeting also establishes that the Nalkar recognize Jake as more important than his presented status suggests, even while both sides avoid saying why. (Chapters 443–446)
Years later, Fairleigh hosts the Sword Saint and Sanguine’s Blood Legacy as the Noboru clan seeks ties with the vampire families. He brings the matter before Katherine, the Nalkar True Ancestor, then supports the arrangement by which a vampire delegation will enter the new universe and establish reciprocal teleportation access. The god’s presence overwhelms him more than it does the visiting Transcendent, but he continues fulfilling his role and remains the mortal patriarch through the meeting’s conclusion. (Chapters 1083–1085)
Appearance and personality
Fairleigh looks like a middle-aged man in an old-fashioned suit, with a well-kept beard and deep red eyes. He is taller than Jake and carries an aura powerful enough to tint the surrounding atmosphere red. He is formal, perceptive, and a skilled negotiator. His calculated opening offer coexists with sincere reverence for history, and he is willing to state that sentiment openly once pretense no longer helps the discussion.
Path, class, and abilities
- High-grade vampire: Fairleigh’s aura places him far beyond C-grade and below godhood, but the chapters do not provide an exact level or named class. He can withstand a god’s presence only with difficulty, fixing an upper limit on his demonstrated standing.
- Vampiric nature: Like other vampires, he uses blood and life energy and lacks ordinary passive regeneration, requiring blood-based sustenance. Vampire techniques can include mist transformation, blood magic, and mental influence, but the story does not demonstrate which combat variants Fairleigh personally possesses.
- Mental probing: During his first meeting he releases subtle mental energy to read Jake’s reactions. Jake detects the attempt, showing that it is discreet rather than irresistible.
- Spatial authority: Fairleigh forcefully teleports Jake into the Nalkar museum during their negotiation. The feat establishes control within his household, though its range and combat limits are not given.
- Latest state: He remains Nalkar Patriarch and mortal intermediary to the True Ancestor when the family opens relations with the Noboru clan.
Relationships
- Jake Thayne: Fairleigh bargains with Jake over a lineage relic. Mutual caution gives way to a fair exchange and a useful, if not intimate, connection between Jake and the Nalkar.
- The Sword Saint: Fairleigh hosts the later meeting that connects the Noboru clan’s vampire legacy to the Nalkar and their True Ancestor.
- Katherine: Fairleigh serves the Nalkar True Ancestor with deference and implements her decision to prepare a delegation for the new universe.
