Yan
Yan is an elderly Gnome alchemist whose cursed black ear is called the Devil Ear. Persecuted and captured for magical knowledge, he escapes Danyum’s old order, becomes a Wizard, and later returns to help Queen Aranju Dolan defend Danyum without submitting to either Night Sky or the Limitless God.
Biography
Magic for the people
Yan is one of three persecuted alchemists whom rival gods cultivate as Wizards, expecting useful power while suppressing the social threat of magic. The prophecy that he will betray Golden Eye is fulfilled as he and the other Wizards damage their host countries and escape to the Alchemist Tower. When Danyum falls into religious rebellion, Yan secretly approaches Aranju, even though her father once helped capture him. He argues that countries and gods are not what need protection—people need power of their own—and offers magic as that power. Aranju accepts. With Yan supporting the queen against priests and agitators, Danyum becomes neutral rather than a prize for either god, and Yan eventually takes control of the country after New Danyum collapses. (Chapters 108–146)
Appearance and personality
Yan is an old Gnome with nearsightedness corrected by glass handiwork. His right ear is black, protruding, and unlike any ordinary species’ ear, producing the name Devil Ear and contributing to his life as a wanderer. (Chapters 110–124)
He is blunt, skeptical of gods, and focused on collective self-protection. Yan acknowledges Night Sky’s strength and avoids empty heroics, but refuses to treat defeat as a reason for ordinary people to remain powerless. (Chapters 124–125)
Powers and abilities
Yan is a Wizard trained through alchemy and demonic magic. He can evade divine scrutiny long enough to reach Aranju and is strong enough to become a political counterweight to religious forces. The corpus does not specify his complete spell repertoire; his confidence is explicitly limited by Black Scale and Night Sky. (Chapters 109–126)
