Yu Xiaogui

Yu Xiaogui is a Foundation Establishment ancestor and former head of the Yu Family, one of the dominant powers around Moongaze Lake. His forceful attempts to preserve that dominance draw him into repeated conflict with the Li and Fei families, and his confrontation with Li Tongya ultimately costs him his cultivation and life. Biography

A powerful ancestor tries to hold the lake

Yu Xiaogui becomes one of the few local Foundation Establishment cultivators after surviving the Five Heroes’ attempted breakthroughs; two of the five had died, and he was the only one of the three peak Qi cultivators to survive. As head of a wealthy Yu Family, he uses its military and market power to press the smaller lakeside families into accepting Yu leadership. His hard rule is not without calculation: when his clan’s Yu Muyuan is implicated in an attack on the Li Family, Xiaogui refuses to intervene as the younger man dies, judging that escalation would expose his family and acknowledging that the episode has turned the Li Family from an apparent ally into an enemy. (Chapters 143–145, 212)

Rivalry with Li Tongya ends in defeat

When Li Tongya challenges the Yu Family’s hold over Mount Huazhong, Xiaogui uses the Jade Smoke Mountain, temporarily entrusted to him by Yu Yufeng, to suppress sword attacks and press a prolonged offensive. Li Tongya outlasts him, and Xiaogui returns to find the family’s market devastated and his elder brother Yu Xiao’ou dead. Later, as the Yu forces encircle Glacial Cloud Peak, Xiaogui again chooses to attack Li Tongya, this time with the same family artifact and several Foundation talismans. Li Tongya splits him with a single sword strike; his son Yu Mugao manages to rejoin his body, but Xiaogui’s cultivation drains away and he withdraws with his life hanging by a thread. A later report confirms that Li Tongya eventually kills him with the Qingche Sword and a Huashang Fruit. (Chapters 268–274, 343–344, 409)

Appearance and personality

Xiaogui is an imposing Foundation Establishment cultivator, often standing with his hands behind his back and relying on his family’s rank to command a room. He can be impulsive and ruthless, yet he also hesitates when a confrontation risks the Yu Family’s survival. The destruction of the market and death of his brother expose the grief and attachment beneath his usually controlled manner. (Chapters 143–144, 212, 266, 274)

Abilities and cultivation

Xiaogui remains in the early stage of Foundation Establishment for more than twenty years, though he later makes further progress without a stated realm. His mana-backed palms glow white like jade and can shatter a Qi cultivator’s defense, while his spiritual sense lets him detect threats around him. In battle he uses Jade Smoke Mountain, a Foundation Establishment artifact that expands from fist size into a small mountain and can suppress or absorb sword attacks. Its use can be disrupted while the artifact is occupied away from him; Li Tongya eventually returns it to its smaller form while inflicting a wound that leaves Xiaogui’s cultivation leaking away. (Chapters 143, 267–269, 330, 343–344)

Relationships

  • Yu Mugao: His son and the family member who manages much of the Yu Family’s political and military strategy. Mugao rescues him after Li Tongya’s strike and withdraws rather than risk the clan’s destruction. (Chapters 143, 268, 343–344)
  • Yu Xiao’ou: His elder brother, whose death in the destroyed marketplace brings Xiaogui to tears and sharpens his hatred of Fei Wangbai. (Chapter 274)
  • Yu Yufeng: A powerful Yu-family elder who entrusted the Jade Smoke Mountain to Xiaogui for protection. (Chapter 268)
  • Li Tongya: His long-standing rival. Their duels end with Xiaogui gravely wounded and later killed. (Chapters 268–274, 343–344, 409)

Items

Xiaogui used the Jade Smoke Mountain as a borrowed family weapon; it belonged to Yu Yufeng before he entrusted it to Xiaogui and is later described as a Yu Family legacy. He also expended three Foundation Establishment talismans when Li Tongya defeated him at Glacial Cloud Peak. (Chapters 268, 343–344)
