Biography

From Jingyang Village to the Li household

When Li Tongya’s search for children with spiritual orifices reached Jingyang Village, he selected the nervous thirteen- or fourteen-year-old Liu Rouxuan and brought her to the Lijing courtyard for instruction. He gave her the Azure Essence Meridian Nourishment Technique and a place to live, but its slow progress left her frustrated; at seventeen, after nearly two years of diligent cultivation, she openly asked whether he might consider her as a partner. Tongya initially redirected her toward cultivation, but he later admitted to Li Xiangping that he had fallen for her. Xiangping revealed that their father had placed Rouxuan with Tongya partly to restrain Liu influence, while Tongya’s affection turned the political arrangement into a mutual courtship. Rouxuan proposed marriage for the coming spring, and Tongya agreed. (Chapters 23, 25, 36–37, 44)

As Tongya’s wife and Li Xuanling’s mother, Rouxuan shared the practical burdens of the household as well as its family life. Tongya entrusted her with a box of Wuzha Worms and their manual for a breeding effort; although she longed for her husband after his months away, she took responsibility for finding experienced raisers and setting up a place for them. Decades later, believing her modest talent and failing health made further cultivation unlikely, she arranged concubines for Tongya so that Xuanling would have siblings, while explicitly refusing to ask the clan to spend more resources on her. After repeated failures to condense the fifth Jade Capital Chakra shortened her life, she chose to stop rather than endure further attempts. Tongya stayed beside her in her final days; before dying, she urged him to remarry and warned him not to favor the Liu Family excessively. (Chapters 52, 68, 113, 245, 283, 297)

Appearance and personality

As a young girl, Rouxuan had expressive eyes and beautiful brows; she was nervous at the spiritual-orifice selection but visibly delighted when chosen. She later spoke candidly about her wishes and her fear of becoming a burden, and remained attentive to her family through age and illness. By her final years, repeated failed breakthroughs had left her with white hair, a withered face, and little vitality. (Chapters 23, 36, 113, 245, 283, 297)

Abilities and cultivation

Rouxuan possessed a spiritual orifice and learned the Azure Essence Meridian Nourishment Technique, an Embryonic Breathing method that slowly gathers spiritual qi to condense chakras. Its Grade One cultivation method and her unremarkable natural talent limited her progress: after many years she had reached only the third stage, and later stood at the fourth stage after failing twice to form the fifth Jade Capital Chakra. Those failures further reduced her lifespan, and she never attained the Qi Cultivation Realm. (Chapters 23, 25, 113, 245)

Relationships

  • Li Tongya: Her husband. Their relationship began while he instructed her in cultivation and grew from her candid advances into a marriage; he remained with her during her final illness. (Chapters 36–44, 283, 297)
  • Li Xuanling: Her only son. Rouxuan worried that he would lack siblings and hoped Tongya would have more heirs. (Chapters 113, 297)
  • Liu Family: Her birth family. Her final advice to Tongya reflects concern that his generosity toward them could create problems. (Chapter 297)

Items

Tongya placed a silver box of Wuzha Worms and their husbandry manual in Rouxuan’s care for the family’s breeding effort. (Chapter 52)
