Li Jiangnian

Biography

A youngest son raised in his brothers' shadow

Li Jiangnian grows up as the youngest of Li Zhouwei's sons, without the golden eyes that mark his brothers. His gray eyes, narrow features and frail build make him painfully conscious of the contrast, and he often avoids meeting others' gazes. His father keeps him close to the family while he cultivates; after years of seclusion he reaches the eighth stage of Qi, but asks for supplies to attempt Foundation Establishment because he feels unable to compare with his brothers. Zhouwei treats him gently, gives him provisions, then sends him to Qunyi to learn arts that will keep him alive and place distance between him and his brothers' radiance. Jiangnian's later Foundation breakthrough gives him the freedom to travel, yet he still relies on Jade True techniques and a mask to hide his appearance. (Chapters 1127, 1235, 1312, 1511, 1614)

Praise becomes power, then entitlement

In the Eastern Sea, Jiangnian discovers that strangers do not recognize him and relishes the praise he receives as Young Master Jade. He rescues travelers and admonishes them to do good, but he also stages threats against weak islands, forcing cultivators who consume blood qi to beg, cripple their cultivation and flatter him. His conduct mixes public benevolence with a private appetite for unrestrained power. After Jiangnian kills Guo Gemei's pursuer, he deliberately sends a shock wave to catch her in his arms. She initially responds to his gentle voice and the handsome appearance of Jade Court General, but when she removes his mask and recoils from his face, he kills her in rage. Jiangnian then washes in the sea and retrieves his mask, but the encounter leaves him staring blankly at the water. (Chapters 1717–1718)

Appearance and personality

Jiangnian is short and thin, with an unattractive face and gray eyes. He is timid around family and deeply sensitive to others' reactions to his appearance, though the anonymity of travel lets him act with confidence and at times cruelly exploit his strength. His Jade True transformations are described as poorly made and distorted; the Jade Court General's armor, by contrast, gives him a handsome and imposing outward form. (Chapters 1127, 1235, 1614, 1717–1718)

Abilities and cultivation

Jade True cultivation and Immortal Foundation

Jiangnian progresses to the eighth Qi Cultivation stage after a long period of seclusion and reaches Foundation Establishment by Chapter 1614. His Jade True techniques can alter his face, but his early attempts are visibly crude. His Immortal Foundation, Jade Court General, manifests jade armor and a jade spear, greatly strengthening his physical offense and concealing his hunched appearance. It has no healing ability; its energy can make wounds difficult to heal, and Jiangnian himself is inexperienced at treating injuries. (Chapters 1511, 1614, 1718)

Combat and perception

While traveling, Jiangnian uses his cultivation to see through Merging Fire and identify a pursuer's affiliation. He overpowers the man threatening Guo Gemei and later kills her when she rejects him. His power gives him a decisive advantage over weaker cultivators, but it does not give him healing skill or control over his violent response to humiliation. (Chapters 1717–1718)

Relationships

  • Li Zhouwei: His father. Zhouwei is unusually gentle with him, provides cultivation resources and sends him away to find a path of his own. (Chapters 1511, 1614)
  • Li Jiangqian and his brothers: Their golden eyes, appearance and success sharpen his sense of inadequacy. (Chapters 1127, 1235, 1511)
  • Guo Gemei: He saves her from a pursuer, then kills her when she sees his face and recoils. The encounter exposes how his longing for acceptance has become entangled with entitlement. (Chapters 1717–1718)

Items

Jiangnian wears a mask to conceal his face while traveling in the Eastern Sea. After Guo Gemei's death it slips into the sea, but he retrieves it; the jade spear manifests from his Jade Court General Immortal Foundation. (Chapter 1718)
