Chen Erniu

Chen Erniu is the mortal manager of Lichuankou and father of Chen Sanshui and Chen Donghe. His gratitude to Li Mutian becomes a lasting commitment to the Li household, even when local rivalries and family anxieties test that loyalty. (Chapters 7, 23, 57)

Biography

Gratitude, village responsibility, and his sons

Erniu arrives as a drought refugee and receives land, shelter, help for his sick wife, and a place in the community through Li Mutian’s patronage. When the Li Family establishes its cultivation authority, Erniu’s appointment as village manager gives him pride and standing he could not otherwise have secured. He repays that opportunity by handling rents, disputes, and communications between the village and the family. When Sanshui hesitates to report a grisly killing because a rival might exploit it, Erniu rebukes him: informing the Lis and protecting villagers must take priority over factional embarrassment. He assists Wan Tiancang against the demon responsible and helps direct the wounded to safety. (Chapters 7, 23, 39–43)

The tribal invasion tests the same principle. Erniu rejects Sanshui’s suggestion that they flee with their valuables and orders him to notify the Li household. His anger at Sanshui’s later dismissal of Mutian’s funeral reflects a fear that his son has inherited privilege without understanding its obligations. The loss of Sanshui to Jianixi leaves the aging father searching through blood and broken teeth for proof of his fate, while he anxiously waits for Donghe’s return from war. (Chapters 78, 83, 108)

Donghe’s marriage into the Li Family appears to create a paternal rupture, but Erniu’s final conversation reveals the public disowning as a cautious response to his son’s changed allegiance rather than an absence of love. He tells Donghe to act boldly and care for his family, accepting the life his son has chosen. The manager who once depended on Mutian’s kindness thus leaves behind a son whose cultivation and marriage tie the Chen household still more closely to the Lis. (Chapters 155–156)

Appearance and personality

Erniu grows heavier and bearded during his years of management. By old age his hair is gray and his eyes cloudy. He combines sincere gratitude with a sharp sense of local politics, and is stern toward Sanshui when carelessness threatens the family’s standing or duties. (Chapters 39, 83, 108)

Abilities and cultivation

Village management

Erniu is a mortal administrator. His strength lies in resolving field disputes, keeping rent accounts, recognizing political consequences, and communicating promptly with the cultivators who protect the village. During the demon crisis he also helps move wounded people to safety; he depends on cultivators for the fighting itself. (Chapters 39–43)

Relationships

  • Li Mutian: Benefactor whose assistance establishes Erniu’s household.
  • Chen Sanshui: Eldest son, repeatedly reprimanded for failing to understand their obligations.
  • Chen Donghe: Cultivator son whose marriage Erniu ultimately accepts. (Chapters 7, 40, 83, 156)

Items

Erniu carries an ordinary saber during village emergencies. His authority chiefly comes from his appointment and knowledge of the community. (Chapter 40)
