Marco

Marco is a senior Modo politician who concludes that continued war in the Flickering World will ruin the civilization. He leads an unsuccessful effort to impeach the Modo Three Kings and remains a prominent anti-war objector after being cleared of involvement in a later assassination.

Biography

Intelligent Plague and the Association

As Black Star repeatedly destroys Modo's expeditionary leadership, Marco argues that withdrawal is the only rational way to limit further losses. He gathers officials around an impeachment effort, blaming the Three Kings' choices—including their approval of the Kunde incident—for bringing Modo into conflict with Han Xiao. Military and political support for the incumbents defeats the motion, leaving Marco's faction publicly marginalized. During the Three Kings' victory speech, Lothaire assassinates one king; Marco flees the chaos and is detained with other objectors because they possess an apparent motive. Investigators later establish their innocence, and political protection secures their release. The replacement king's anti-war stance strengthens their position, and Marco's faction becomes even firmer in opposing continued participation, though the corpus does not state Marco's later personal fate. (Chapters 1178–1183)

Appearance and personality

No stable physical description is supplied. Marco is analytical, politically bold, and willing to risk his office to redirect Modo's policy. Defeat leaves him bitter but not repentant; he despises officials who privately agree yet refuse to expose themselves. His horror during the assassination and bitter compliance with detention show that he neither planned nor expected the killing. (Chapters 1178 and 1180–1182)

Abilities and class

Marco's demonstrated capabilities are political organization, formal argument, coalition building, and leadership of an impeachment campaign. The corpus does not identify him as a Super or provide a combat class, grade, or personal ability. (Chapters 1178–1180)

Relationships

  • Modo Three Kings: Marco opposes their decision to keep reinforcing the Flickering World, leads the attempt to impeach them, and becomes a target of their political retaliation after the motion fails. (Chapters 1178–1181)
  • Han Xiao: Han is not Marco's ally, but Black Star's overwhelming pressure convinces him that Modo must withdraw. Marco uses the consequences of the Kunde operation as a central argument against the Three Kings. (Chapters 1178–1180)
  • Lothaire: Lothaire's unsanctioned assassination causes Marco and the other objectors to be detained as suspects. Marco has no demonstrated knowledge of or relationship with the assassin. (Chapters 1181–1183)

Items

No notable personal item is established. Marco is shown drinking dark ember-colored wine during a private political meeting, but it is not treated as a distinctive possession. (Chapter 1178)
