Davey first receives Randidly's experimental steel ingot and examines it with the suspicion of an investigator facing a crime, grounding extraordinary materials in practical factory judgment. As Erickson Steel expands into underground facilities, Randidly returns to offer him a job and discuss how workers will live and labor there. Davey's role is to translate a founder's immense shaping power into routines that real steelworkers can sustain. (Chapters 511, 515, 598)
