Decklan Hyde
Decklan Hyde is an early Donnyton squad leader whose tactical discipline eventually gives way to grief, alienation, and Straud’s fatal promise of restoring the pre-System world. (Chapters 27, 104, 951, and 1281)
Biography
Discipline, loss, and defection
Decklan helps defend Donnyton and drills his unit into a responsive fighting force, guiding Tera and the others through ambushes with hand signals and fast decisions. Tera’s death leaves him carrying a darkness that later contact with Randidly only partly eases. Straud exploits that wound by promising a return to the world before the System; Decklan abandons Earth for the ritual, and Randidly later remembers the failure to save him as a lasting regret. (Chapters 27, 64, 104, 542, 951, 1281, and 1700)
Appearance and personality
Decklan is first perceived as feral, quick, and tightly controlled rather than physically imposing. His later demeanor is marked more by grief and grim determination than by any repeatedly described clothing or coloration. (Chapters 27–28, 50, and 951)
Abilities and progression
Decklan is a fast close-range combatant and an effective squad tactician. He coordinates movement in dangerous terrain, closes on armored leaders, and combines speed with hard, efficient strikes. His exact Class and named Skills are not stated consistently enough to define, and his final ritual depends on Straud rather than a technique demonstrated as Decklan’s own. (Chapters 50, 104, 542, and 1281)
Relationships
Tera is his closest early companion and subordinate; her death destabilizes him. Dozer trains with him, Randidly tries to steady him, and Straud converts his longing into defection. (Chapters 27–28, 64, 549, 951, and 1281)
Items
No enduring named personal item is established. (Chapters 27–1281)
