History

Language without conscious switching

Lex receives the converter before opening the Inn, allowing him to greet guests whose languages he has never studied. The device makes translation so seamless that he usually hears and speaks English from his own perspective and only notices the change when companions cannot understand the same language. It translates communication rather than granting every related cultural or written skill. (Chapters 3, 303, and 392)

Abilities and properties

• It analyzes languages and translates speech to and from the wearer in real time. (Chapter 3)
• The wearer hears English while listeners hear their own native language. (Chapter 3)
• Automatic comprehension can conceal which language is actually being spoken, and separate effects may still govern special written messages. (Chapters 303 and 392)
