History

Learning to identify the universe

The monocle begins as a gold-rimmed lens with no stored knowledge. Lex connects it to a computer and expands its database, then relies on it when hospitality and travel expose him to objects beyond his experience. Later upgrades move the same identification function into more advanced lenses, making the original monocle the first stage of an evolving information tool. (Chapters 3, 92, 621, and 1590)

Abilities and properties

• It can ingest information manually, by observing data, or through a connected database. (Chapter 3)
• Its readings depend on the knowledge already stored, so an empty or incomplete database limits identification. (Chapter 3)
• Later versions combine the identification function with upgraded lenses and compatible techniques. (Chapters 621 and 1590)
