History

Protection beyond the threshold

The slippers give an inexperienced Lex a narrow but essential defense when he begins visiting other worlds. They protect against environmental hazards rather than hostile attacks, a distinction that repeatedly forces him to separate safe travel from safe combat. In the Dream realm their protection also helps Lex resist ambient confusion, while Jack and his crew remain vulnerable without an equivalent. (Chapters 3, 56, and 2296)

Abilities and properties

• They protect their wearer from hazardous foreign environments outside the Inn. (Chapter 3)
• They are not defensive armor and do not stop deliberate attacks. (Chapter 3)
• Their environmental protection includes resistance to the Dream realm's ambient confusing influence. (Chapter 2296)
