Ptolemy Woodman is the student leader who stakes ten years of service on an expedition beyond Deadfall Cliff. He distrusts Lex as an imposed adviser, but his research, logistical preparation, and destructive green fire keep the expedition alive long enough to secure a valuable Spirit well. Biography

An expedition earned the hard way

Ptolemy spends years researching and lobbying for an expedition the academy did not propose, accepting a contract that will cost him a decade of labor if it fails. Lex's late addition as an adviser therefore feels like unearned interference. Ptolemy keeps his disdain professional until the party reaches his command, then makes clear that he expects competence. His preparation is nonetheless genuine: he trades rare seeds to the Trelop Karom, wards camps, informs guards of hidden threats, and organizes specialists around clear objectives. (Chapters 246–256)

Fire, responsibility, and reluctant respect

When the forest ambushes the expedition, Ptolemy counters with green flames that consume hostile fire and later burns a defensive clearing around the camp. He accepts responsibility for every member even while refusing Lex special treatment, scouts after attacks, and returns from the wider forest war in time to save exhausted defenders. Lex's discovery of a Spirit well finally gives the expedition a major success. Ptolemy remains irritated by the legends forming around him, but calls doctors for the injured Lex and uses the discovery to secure academy intervention. (Chapters 257–271)

Appearance and personality

Ptolemy dresses properly for the deadly cold and maintains a controlled, professional expression even when privately contemptuous. He is proud, prepared, hardworking, suspicious of privilege, and deeply invested in human self-reliance. Bias against Lex repeatedly distorts his judgment, yet leadership prevents him from abandoning safety measures merely because he dislikes the person who needs them. (Chapters 246–248, 255–271)

Abilities and cultivation

Ptolemy produces green fire capable of consuming ordinary hostile flames, contesting the Trelop forest, and burning a broad lifeless barrier around the expedition camp. He leads mounted formations, coordinates scouts and guards, erects layered camps, negotiates with sentient forests, and plans against metal-eating Druks. The fire is a powerful deterrent but not effortless victory: extended battles leave him bloodied and depleted, stronger threats require group tactics, and protecting a multidisciplinary expedition constrains how aggressively he can use destructive force. Relationships

• Lex Williams: Ptolemy sees Lex as an unearned adviser and resists giving him credit, but Lex's warnings and Spirit-well discovery materially improve the expedition. Their conflict remains professional rather than treacherous. (Chapters 246–271)
• Karom and Goli: Ptolemy bargains with Karom to clear a route and threatens Goli's forest with specialized fire, using both negotiation and coercion against Trelop powers. (Chapters 254–269)
• The expedition: Ptolemy has personally assumed the financial and professional risk of failure, making the students' survival and discoveries tests of his future as well as theirs. (Chapters 246, 255–271)
