Orin
Orin is the first dwarf of the Midnight realm, leader of its secluded Veevatil-mining civilization, and the artisan responsible for some of Lex Williams's most ambitious treasures. His self-taught craft eventually carries him into divinity as the Hammer Deity, yet he remains a practical smith who joins the Inn and works beside Lex at the forge.
Biography
Protecting the Veevatil dwarves
The Heavenly tree confines the dwarves in an attempt to force their submission, but Orin prevents the punishment from defining them: he never tells his people they are prisoners. Deprived of the fear and resentment the tree expected to exploit, they live contentedly as miners and smiths until the Innkeeper reveals that other peoples exist. Orin later sends several thousand dwarves to the Midnight Inn so they can learn about the wider world, while others return with that knowledge to their mines. (Chapters 1110 and 1364)
Forging Naraka and joining the Inn
Orin befriends Lex through their shared interest in dragonfire and forging, then makes Lex's sword from Veevatil and other exceptional components. He hammers the nascent weapon's spirit into shape while Lex supplies his own bone and a dangerous flame for the final joining. The work exhausts Orin and forces close coordination, but it establishes a lasting exchange: Lex studies treasure-making under him, then supplies outside books, inheritances, tutorials, and other technical knowledge that the isolated dwarf never possessed. Orin ultimately crushes a platinum key and takes the test to become an Inn worker. (Chapters 1110–1112, 1384, and 1538–1541)
The Hammer Deity at work
As the Hammer Deity, Orin helps turn the Crystal Volcano into a furnace and partners with Lex on the Karmic Bead, a project whose materials and law-bearing effects demand extensive preparation. He later repairs Lex's self-healing spatial ring, prepares foundations for the Inn's tavern network, and completes the structures with Lex through their unusually strong working rhythm. By the latest account, he is still making dangerous treasures for the Inn's family, including a spear for Almira powerful enough to threaten nearly anyone around her. (Chapters 1748–1824, 1903, 1996, 2001–2004, and 2390)
Appearance and personality
Orin is a dwarf whose standing comes from craft rather than ceremony. He is stubborn about a smith's ability to master flame, willing to continue hammering while severely fatigued, and so absorbed in technical study that Lex finds him still immersed after the Midnight realm reopens. He also has a rough, playful streak: he sleeps drunk at the furnace and repeatedly hammers Lex's hand while trying to exploit the durability of Lex's body to improve his own tool. (Chapters 1111, 1384, 1818, and 2004)
Abilities and cultivation
Mythic craft and divine authority
Orin begins as a Mythic dwarf and later bears the titles Hammer Deity and Deity of Hammers. His divinity centers on forging rather than unrestricted combat. He can work materials and law-bearing treasures beyond ordinary smithing, and his growing strength expands the grade of objects he can produce; however, the narrative does not define a conventional cultivation stage for him after this change or show that his authority removes the need for tools, materials, and preparation. (Chapters 1110, 1364, 1748, and 2332)
Treasure forging
Orin forges by shaping both matter and the spirit that forms within a sufficiently powerful treasure. Naraka requires Veevatil, Lex's bone, dragonfire, precisely timed hammer blows, and Lex's direct participation. The Karmic Bead likewise requires a specialized furnace, formations, rare auction materials, and a long collaborative process. These projects demonstrate exceptional knowledge and control, but also clear limits: heat can threaten him, fatigue affects him, and the highest-grade works cannot be produced instantly or from ordinary ingredients. (Chapters 1110–1112, 1384, 1749–1750, and 1818–1824)
Repair and construction
Beyond weapons, Orin repairs spatial equipment, builds furnace infrastructure, and prepares the structural foundations of mobile taverns. He and Lex have enough synergy to divide labor and finish specialized buildings ranging from underwater vessels to other realm-traversing designs. His craft therefore covers maintenance and architecture as well as weaponry, although the completed object still depends on its original repair properties and appropriate materials. (Chapters 1903, 1996, and 2001–2004)
Relationships
- Lex Williams: Lex is Orin's student, collaborator, employer, and supplier of outside technical knowledge. Their friendship is expressed most clearly through difficult shared forging projects.
- Almira: Almira calls him Uncle Orin and carries a spear he made specifically for her.
- Luthor: Luthor supplies the dangerous flame used during Naraka's final assembly while Orin and Lex coordinate the joining.
Items
Orin has no finalized notable-item inventory. His Veevatil hammer and the works he produces are central to his craft, but they are not assigned finalized item articles associated with him.
