Mateo

Mateo is a skull-headed caretaker projection of the Temple of Fasting. He guides Lex through dangerous training, diagnostics, and restricted archives, combining genuine pedagogical concern with a willingness to manipulate a student's motives. His knowledge is broad, but both his cultivation and his temple clearance have explicit ceilings. (Chapters 893–940, 2166–2167)

Biography

Training through danger and deception

Mateo receives Lex while the temple's other caretakers lie dormant and immediately warns that some secrets are dangerous enough to kill those who learn them. He supplies a protective suit and techniques for planet bonding, law affinity, equipment repair, and controlled testing, repeatedly revising his lesson plan as Lex comprehends faster than expected. When his own methods prove insufficient, he wakes Cassandra and physically conceals a malfunctioning forbidden door rather than let curiosity override temple security. (Chapters 893–910)

Mateo's most consequential teaching choice is deceptive. He constructs a false scenario around Ra as a training enemy because he believes Lex's disposition responds better to moral pressure than abstract instruction. Cassandra later reveals the manipulation, and Lex resents it. Mateo apologizes awkwardly but continues helping with healing, bloodline interpretation, and inherited information, revealing an instructor who cares about results and survival yet does not always recognize when motivation has crossed into coercion. Limits of a caretaker

Mateo later refuses to prescribe treatment for Moon from hearsay, insisting that responsible instruction requires direct examination despite his eagerness for another teaching opportunity. When Lex returns at peak Heaven Immortal, Mateo cannot sense his realm and nearly initiates a scan before the temple warns him away from casual inquiry. His catalog access also fails to identify the Masterless bloodline, and he must wake a peak Celestial instructor for later testing. These encounters convert his apparent omniscience into a defined, limited expertise. (Chapters 1131, 2166–2167, 2222)

Appearance and personality

Mateo appears as a projection with a skull for a head, yet the skull is remarkably expressive, conveying alarm, embarrassment, excitement, and relief. He is curious, methodical, excitable about rare teaching cases, and protective of temple procedure. His caution is strongest around forbidden knowledge and uncertain diagnoses; his weaker judgment appears when he decides that a beneficial outcome can justify manipulating a student's emotions. Abilities and cultivation

Within the Temple of Fasting, Mateo can project a functional presence, move objects telekinetically, scan bodies and cultivation, transmit complex information directly into the mind, access portions of the temple catalog, and issue equipment, techniques, or training materials. He understands law affinity, bloodlines, healing, planet bonding, and staged combat tests. These abilities depend on temple systems and assigned clearance: he cannot freely act outside the temple, cannot access every record, should not diagnose an absent patient, and by Chapter 2166 is weaker than Lex's peak Heaven Immortal cultivation. Relationships

• Lex Williams: Mateo is one of Lex's most technically useful instructors, but their relationship is complicated by the false Ra scenario and by Lex eventually surpassing Mateo's cultivation. (Chapters 893–949, 2166–2167)
• Cassandra: Mateo wakes Cassandra when his own training plan reaches its limit. Her greater expertise helps Lex while also exposing Mateo's deception. (Chapters 905, 932)
