Lorelei Kinari

Lorelei Kinari is an immortal mermaid whose relentlessly “positive” narration masks a lifetime of catastrophe. Orphaned when sharks destroyed her tribe and repeatedly targeted by bounty hunters, she meets Lex while fleeing magical murder hornets and turns a rescue mission into an unexpectedly cheerful friendship.

Biography

Survival disguised as optimism

Lorelei's tribe is killed on the day of her birth, and the infant mermaid is swallowed before Havval rescues her. She remembers the consequence rather than the event and copes by alternately blessing and cursing her savior. Later bounties make assassination attempts ordinary, so her exaggerated positivity becomes a survival posture: she expects disaster, jokes about it, and keeps moving rather than allowing anxiety to paralyze her. Rescue from Arch-Heaven

Lex finds Lorelei swimming through the air with magical murder hornets behind her. She initially assumes his group also wants her bounty, a reasonable suspicion shaped by repeated pursuit, but accepts the escape once their actions prove otherwise. At the Inn her lively temperament wins Lex over, and the sanctuary changes her immediate position from hunted fugitive to protected guest without erasing the enemies or history that taught her suspicion. Appearance and personality

Lorelei is a mermaid who can swim through open air after becoming immortal, retaining a fish tail rather than taking an ordinary human lower body. She is talkative, funny, and determined to call herself positive even while describing her life as a shipwreck. That humor coexists with hypervigilance: any approaching stranger may be a bounty hunter until proven otherwise. (Chapters 1994–1996 and 1999)

Immortal flight-swimming

Lorelei is an immortal and can propel her mermaid body through the air as naturally as swimming in water. The movement lets her flee airborne magical hornets and navigate outside an aquatic environment. Its exact speed, energy cost, and underlying law are not explained, and pursuit by the hornet swarm shows that aerial mobility alone cannot guarantee escape from comparably persistent enemies. Survival awareness

Repeated assassination attempts have made Lorelei quick to identify pursuit and suspicious of anyone closing distance. This is learned vigilance rather than supernatural precognition: she notices threats and assumes hostile motives, but Lex's approach initially fools her assessment. Her latest security comes from the Inn's protection and allies, not from a demonstrated ability to neutralize the bounty at its source. (Chapters 1994–1999 and 2003)
