Ballom
Ballom Val Kilger is a Devil Dao Lord, leader of the Devils in the Origin realm, and a senior figure in the Humanoid Alliance. He combines profitable diplomacy with unusually consistent respect for the Midnight Inn, using his relationships and information network to protect both Devil interests and a personal connection he believes the Alliance repeatedly undervalues.
Biography
From curious guest to intermediary
Ballom visits the early Midnight Inn disguised as a human and introduces himself as Loretta's father, hoping to read the Innkeeper's reaction to trouble in uncharted space. Unable to gauge him, Ballom chooses curiosity over hostility. He later warns other Dao Lords not to seize phenomena associated with the Inn, citing Ra's defeat, and proposes cooperation with a host whose knowledge may benefit them. That restraint establishes a durable channel between the Inn, the Devils, and later the Humanoid Alliance. (Chapters 183, 242, 404–416, and 492)
Alliance diplomacy and divided loyalties
Ballom uses personal concessions to create back-channel relations between the Alliance and the Artica, treats the Innkeeper's messages as strategically significant, and brings Bridget to the tea party as his wife. When Alliance factions abuse Inn access to kidnap Z, he confronts the responsible leadership, argues that the insult is far more dangerous than the captive's apparent rank suggests, and tries to locate Z himself. He cannot overrule the wider Alliance or command all Devils, but he preserves his personal relationship with the Inn while refusing Devil participation in the expected cleanup. (Chapters 1441–1442, 1617–1747, 2029–2113, 2219, and 2326)
Protecting Garvitz
As war isolates realms, Ballom recalls Devils to Garvitz and helps manage Alliance affairs because his realm remains one of the few connected to the universe. Failed ventures and the Alliance's choices constrain his plans, while his attempt to recover Z stalls against a private realm and political protection. When Bridget detects an impossible shift in Garvitz's flow of time, Ballom immediately recognizes the knowledge as dangerous and swears non-interference before a hidden power. The decision favors his realm and family over exploiting a secret whose scale exceeds him. (Chapter 2377)
Appearance and personality
Ballom normally presents as a devilishly handsome young human man, but this is a chosen appearance rather than his true Devil form; when he begins transforming, his voice deepens, while the complete form is not described. He is calculating, profit-aware, and fond of mystery, yet less opportunistically reckless than other Devils expect. His anger over Z's kidnapping and seriousness when Bridget senses altered time show that professional courtesy can become genuine loyalty and protective caution. (Chapters 183, 242, 492, 2052–2069, 2326, and 2377)
Abilities and cultivation
Dao Lord perception and Devil form
Ballom is a Dao Lord whose presence can force the Midnight Inn System into protective hibernation and whose name can create a perceptible connection when thought across realms. He can adopt a human appearance or begin changing into a stronger Devil form, emit Dao radiation, open portals, inspect memories gathered from more than a million Devils, and use his Dao-level senses to assess realm-scale changes. These senses are powerful rather than absolute: the system hides from him, the Innkeeper remains unreadable, and Bridget detects a minute time shift that he misses. (Chapters 183, 242, 492, 1618, 2326, and 2377)
Leadership and diplomacy
Ballom commands immense prestige among Devils, maintains a private minor-realm domain in Garvitz, and can convene Dao Lords or Alliance leaders at extreme speed. His most consequential capability is institutional: he trades personal benefit for diplomatic access, collates distributed intelligence, and mobilizes Devil participation in wars. He cannot unilaterally determine the Devil race's direction or overcome Alliance voting blocs, so his influence works through negotiation, warnings, and personal undertakings rather than absolute command. (Chapters 492, 582, 1441–1442, 1617–1704, 2029, 2326, and 2377)
