Carlem

Carlem is a Dunross resident whose decision to abandon a reckless bandit attack saves his life and makes him Kai LuForia's first guide on Astalith. His practical help is repaid by Kai's exploitation of his household and eventual hypnosis, leaving Carlem alive but stripped of meaningful control over his family situation.

Biography

Survival, hospitality, and loss of agency

Carlem joins bandits because his family needs money, but recognizes that the untroubled strangers discussing who should fight them are dangerously abnormal. When his warning is dismissed, he runs rather than die for pride. Kai catches him at his sand sail, praises the decision, and asks for transport. Carlem supplies local clothing advice, a cover story at a corrupt checkpoint, shelter, and a candid explanation of Flexom's usurpation, turning a frightened encounter into the travelers' entry point to Dunross and the continental conflict. (Chapters 347–352)

Carlem later returns home to find that Kai has begun sexual relationships with his wife Tamra and adult twin daughters, Temera and Temara. He objects that he welcomed Kai as a friend and cannot understand the betrayal, but his family dismisses his distress. Kai ultimately hypnotizes Carlem because he does not want to handle further resistance, conditioning him to accept living separately. The outcome makes Carlem's initial hospitality consequential in a deeply coercive way: the stranger he saved and assisted overrides his objections and permanently disrupts his household. (Chapters 389–393)

Appearance and personality

The narrative does not specify Carlem's age, hair, eyes, height, or build. He lives with a catkin wife and half-catkin daughters, but it never identifies his own species. Glowing glyph tattoos appear on his arm when he powers the sand sail. (Chapters 348–349)

Carlem is cautious, observant, and unapologetically survival-minded. He accepts being called a coward because staying alive matters more than a doomed display of loyalty. He is also hospitable and socially adaptable, quickly inventing a plausible family story to pass corrupt guards, though his earlier bandit work shows that practicality does not always equal virtue. (Chapters 347–350)

Powers and abilities

Carlem channels chi through tattooed glyphs, using wind to create a small sand tornado that propels his sail. He explains that glyphs help beginners feel and direct chi, while fully trained witches and wizards can cast without them. He can draw glyphs on a surface but cannot form them in air or water, explicitly placing his skill below Nadya's free-form rune work. (Chapter 348)

Relationships

  • Kai LuForia: Carlem guides and shelters Kai, who later violates that trust, displaces him from his household, and hypnotizes him.
  • Temara: Temara is one of Carlem's adult twin daughters; his attempt to object to Kai's claim over her is overridden.
  • Tamra and Temera: Carlem's wife and other daughter join Kai's household alongside Temara, leaving his original family structure broken.

Items

Carlem operates an unnamed sand sail powered through his wind glyphs. It is ordinary regional transport rather than a generated notable item, and no named personal weapon or artifact is established.
