Lan QiRen

Lan QiRen is the GusuLan Sect's strict senior teacher, responsible for educating generations of disciples and for sustaining the sect through war and later crises.

Biography

Teaching at the Cloud Recesses

Lan QiRen teaches the visiting young cultivators through formal questions, classical principles, and strict enforcement of the Cloud Recesses rules. He holds Lan WangJi up as an exemplary student and reacts strongly to Wei WuXian's proposed use of resentful energy, assigning punishment when argument and disruption overtake the lesson. (Chapters 13–18)

His opposition is rooted in responsibility as much as temperament. Lan QiRen teaches heirs whose experiments can affect entire sects, so he treats an untested method of manipulating resentment as a danger rather than an interesting hypothesis. The later effectiveness of Wei WuXian's inventions does not erase those risks, but Lan QiRen's certainty prevents teacher and student from developing a language in which caution and discovery might coexist.

War and sect stewardship

After the QishanWen attack damages the Cloud Recesses, Lan QiRen works to hold the Gusu area and the sect together while Lan XiChen travels and assists other fronts. Lan XiChen later says that their uncle had cared for the GusuLan Sect almost single-handedly for years. (Chapters 48, 55–56, and 64)

He also raises Lan XiChen and Lan WangJi under circumstances shaped by their parents' isolation. That parental responsibility intensifies his response when Lan WangJi protects Wei WuXian after Nightless City and suffers the discipline whip. Lan QiRen sees not only a broken rule but the repetition of a family history in which devotion separates a gifted Lan cultivator from the sect.

Second siege and aftermath

At the second siege of Burial Mound, Lan QiRen accepts the need to shelter in the Demon-Slaughtering Cave and cuts his palm to repair its defensive array. Though still suspicious of Wei WuXian and disappointed by Lan WangJi's choices, he listens to the evidence about the loss of spiritual power and Jin GuangYao. He remains an active teacher afterward, presiding over discipline and sect banquets at the Cloud Recesses. (Chapters 79–86 and 110–120)

The siege does not transform him into an enthusiastic supporter of demonic cultivation. It forces a narrower but important adjustment: people he distrusts can still provide correct evidence and save his disciples, while respected sect leaders can weaponize orthodox forms. His later acceptance is expressed through continued shared life at the Cloud Recesses rather than a declaration that his earlier judgments were wholly wrong.

Appearance and personality

Lan QiRen is tall and thin, with an upright posture and a long black goatee. He is widely regarded as pedantic, stubborn, and severe, but also as a teacher whose methods produce outstanding students. His rigidity coexists with a strong sense of responsibility for the sect and its juniors. (Chapter 13)

Abilities and cultivation

Lan QiRen is a senior GusuLan cultivator whose principal strengths are scholarship, teaching, array knowledge, and disciplined swordsmanship. He represents orthodox cultivation at its most systematic: identify the class of spirit, apply the established response, and preserve rules that keep dangerous experimentation contained.

Cultivation theory and instruction

His lectures cover spirits, fierce corpses, resentful energy, liberation, suppression, and elimination. He tests students through cases that require the correct category and response, and he immediately recognizes the danger in Wei WuXian's proposal to redirect resentment. His knowledge is broad and accurate within orthodox practice, although his rejection of unconventional methods can prevent him from seeing when those methods produce valid evidence or protection. Teaching is itself one of Lan QiRen's consequential skills. He trains generations of Lan disciples, maintains standards during Lan XiChen's absences, and gives juniors a shared vocabulary for arrays, night-hunting, music, and conduct. The consistency visible in Lan SiZhui and Lan JingYi reflects that institutional work even when their personalities differ sharply from his.

Arrays and emergency defense

At the second siege of Burial Mound, Lan QiRen recognizes the damage to the protective formation and repairs it with his own blood. Blood can carry spiritual force into an array when ordinary reserves and materials are unavailable, but the method costs the user physically and is suited to an emergency rather than routine maintenance. The repair buys time; it does not permanently neutralize the mass of corpses outside. (Chapters 79–81)

Swordsmanship and limitations

He remains an experienced swordsman capable of fighting walking corpses after the assembled cultivators' spiritual power has been suppressed. Technique, formation, and physical conditioning allow him to continue when high-output spiritual attacks are unavailable. Like the others, however, he cannot simply ignore the suppression and must rely on Wei WuXian's analysis and the juniors' defense to escape. (Chapters 80–82)

Lan QiRen's rigid judgment is his recurring limitation. Rules protect the sect, but personal anger toward Wei WuXian and fear for Lan WangJi can make him treat association as proof. The later crises force him to fight beside people he distrusts, showing that correct cultivation knowledge and correct moral judgment are related but not identical.
