Lan JingYi

Lan JingYi is an outspoken GusuLan junior who participates in the investigations at Mo Village and Yi City, the second siege of Burial Mound, and later night-hunts with his peers.

Biography

The formation at Mo Village

Lan JingYi joined Lan SiZhui and the other juniors in setting the Phantom Attraction Flags at Mo Manor. He argued with Mo XuanYu when the formation was disturbed, but during the attack he signaled for senior help, refused to abandon the residents, and tried to stop the panicked household from scattering in the dark. Dafan Mountain and the Cloud Recesses

At Dafan Mountain, JingYi challenged Jiang Cheng's criticism of Lan WangJi and helped investigate the goddess temple. His questions supplied a detail that helped Wei WuXian identify the soul-consuming goddess, though forgetting a signal firework left him dreading punishment. (Chapters 7–9)

Back at the Cloud Recesses, he scolded noise while speaking loudly, caught himself gossiping, and fiercely defended HanGuang-Jun's reputation and rabbits. When the spirit-summoning bell sounded, he dropped the argument and ran to assist with the fierce arm. (Chapters 11–12 and 19)

Poison and testimony in Yi City

In Yi City, corpse-poisoning powder left JingYi rigid until Wei WuXian treated him with glutinous-rice congee. Frightened but cooperative, he watched the streets, reported the approaching horde, and offered his own blood when he thought the animated paper figures would require more. (Chapters 34–38)

After Empathy exposed Xue Yang's deception, JingYi grieved openly for Xiao XingChen and A-Qing. He and SiZhui obtained incense, candles, and paper money and burned offerings, turning the investigation into remembrance as well as survival. (Chapters 41–42)

The second siege of Burial Mound

JingYi was among the juniors abducted to Burial Mound and described their masked captors. During the siege, he joined the defense after the adults lost spiritual power, killed dozens of corpses, and returned to the line even when Wen Ning was ordered to remove the juniors. (Chapters 68 and 79–82)

Afterward he helped gather the Wen remnants' ashes into a perfume pouch, dismissed other juniors' fear of Wen Ning, and defended SiZhui during Jin Ling's angry response to the revelation of his childhood identity. (Chapters 82–83)

Discipline and the White Room

JingYi remained subject to copying punishments and improper-script corrections, but he and the juniors secretly continued speaking with Wei WuXian and treated “Senior Wei” as a mentor. (Chapters 114–116)

During the White Room night-hunt, he examined testimony, proposed identifying the female ghost through facial details, and was pushed to the front of the vigil despite his fear. He held position and worked with the group when the iron hook attacked. (Chapters 123–124)

Appearance and personality

Lan JingYi wears the robes and forehead ribbon of the GusuLan Sect. He is loud, candid, easily startled, and quick to complain, but also curious, loyal, emotionally open, and willing to return to danger for others. (Chapters 34–42 and 79–83)

Abilities and cultivation

Lan JingYi has the standard sword, talisman, and night-hunting education of a GusuLan junior. He is less polished than Lan SiZhui and openly voices fear or disbelief, but experience turns that candor into a useful field quality: he reports what he notices, challenges explanations that do not fit, and continues acting even when frightened.

Swordsmanship and group defense

Lan JingYi carries a spiritual sword and can fight ordinary walking corpses alongside other trained juniors. In Yi City, the fog and corpse poison prevent a clean duel, so he must hold formation, obey instructions, and protect companions while senior cultivators engage Xue Yang. At Burial Mound, he fights after the group's spiritual power has been disrupted, relying on physical discipline and coordinated defense rather than powerful sword techniques. The source does not give him a named personal technique or senior cultivation rank. His strength is appropriate to a developing disciple, and major threats can overwhelm him quickly. This limitation is part of his growth: surviving teaches him to value correct signals, positioning, and trustworthy leadership instead of treating courage as an individual charge.

Night-hunting procedure and observation

He knows how to inspect a damaged array, use talismans, recognize common corpse behavior, and send a flare for senior assistance. During the Mo Village incident, those procedures help the juniors contain a threat whose true nature they do not yet understand. In later investigations, he compares what witnesses say with the physical environment and contributes details that more restrained characters might leave unspoken. (Chapters 3–5 and 121–124)

Lan JingYi's blunt speech can violate GusuLan decorum, but it also exposes contradictions. He asks the questions other juniors are thinking, objects when adults dismiss evidence, and later repeats what he personally witnessed at Burial Mound. The skill is social rather than supernatural: his testimony matters because he is known as a Lan disciple with little talent for calculated deception.

Courage under fear

Unlike characters whose composure hides emotion, Lan JingYi frequently admits that a corpse, spirit, or punishment frightens him. He nevertheless enters Yi City's fog, consumes the remedy Wei WuXian prepares, returns to the Demon-Slaughtering Cave, and faces sect elders after surviving the siege. His courage is therefore demonstrated persistence, not an absence of fear. (Chapters 36–43 and 79–82)

He remains impulsive and can speak before understanding the consequences, which creates friction with Jin Ling and senior Lans. Lan SiZhui's calmer leadership compensates for that weakness, while Lan JingYi's readiness to react and protest prevents the group from becoming passive.
