Fairy

Fairy is Jin Ling's black-haired spiritual dog. Trained to attack evil beings, Fairy serves as his companion, tracker, and warning system throughout his night-hunts.

Biography

Jin Ling's companion

Fairy is given to Jin Ling by Jin GuangYao. At Xinglu Ridge, the dog tracks danger around the stone castles and follows Jiang Cheng's whistle, while its mere presence terrifies the dog-phobic Wei WuXian. Jin Ling insists that Fairy looks frightening but does not bite ordinary people because it is trained to target evil beings. (Chapters 21, 24, 34)

Night-hunts and pursuit

Fairy warns Jin Ling of a late-night presence at an inn before the events that draw the juniors toward Yi City. Later, the dog follows Wei WuXian's scent to Guanyin Temple and detects the killing intent behind its closed doors. (Chapters 35, 98–99)

Guanyin Temple

Fairy charges into the temple and attacks Su She, then retreats when isolated rather than letting him kill it. The wounds it leaves on Su She are deep enough to hinder him. Fairy subsequently finds help at a YunmengJiang dependent sect and returns with rescuers, reuniting with Jin Ling after the confrontation. (Chapters 101–103, 107, 110)

Appearance and personality

Fairy is a black-haired dog with pointed ears and a long tongue. The dog is intimidating in a confrontation but affectionate and obedient with Jin Ling, and cautious enough to flee when badly outmatched. (Chapters 21, 24, 102)

Abilities and cultivation

Fairy is a spiritual dog bred and trained for night-hunting. Its value comes from senses that human cultivators cannot easily reproduce, physical force against hostile beings, and a close working bond with Jin Ling.

Scent tracking and threat detection

Fairy can follow a person's scent across distance and through environments where visual pursuit fails. Jin Ling uses whistles and commands to direct the search, but the dog can continue tracking independently and return to allies. At Guanyin Temple, it reacts to concealed killing intent before every human present understands the threat, turning instinct into an early warning. (Chapters 24 and 98–103)

Scent establishes contact, not guilt. Fairy can locate a person or distinguish a hidden presence, but it cannot explain why that person acted or whether an accusation is true. Strong barriers, confusing routes, and orders from its handler still affect what it can reach.

Combat and night-hunting training

Fairy is trained to attack evil beings rather than indiscriminately bite ordinary people. Its jaws and claws can injure an armed cultivator, interrupt an attack, and hold a target long enough for Jin Ling or another cultivator to respond. As an animal combatant it must close distance and can be restrained or harmed by weapons, so it is most effective when surprise and tracking create the opening. (Chapters 24 and 101–103)

The golden clan sign on its collar identifies LanlingJin affiliation and allows anyone who finds the dog to recognize that its handler may need help. This turns Fairy into both tracker and messenger. Its strongest limitation in Wei WuXian's company is unintended: his severe fear of dogs can provoke panic and temporarily undermine his judgment even when Fairy is friendly.
