Orland
Orland is a Royal-ranked military General who briefs Karl’s combined team on a dangerous Frost Giant mission before a fatal reflexive clash ends his command activity.
Biography
Ordering a mission built on incomplete intelligence
Orland meets Karl, Bob Mackenzie, and the returning Elites as the most powerful of four Generals gathered at the Frost Giant front. With summoning sites failing and troop movements changing, he needs direct proof of what happened at a suspected cavern occupied by a Royal-ranked Frost Giant. Central government, the Bureau, and the army have already approved the mission, leaving Orland to brief a team selected by regional draw rather than negotiate whether it will go. (Chapters 305–306)
Tension between Karl and another General threatens to derail the briefing, so Orland orders them to stop or settle the matter through a combat trial. He then lays out the estimated enemy force and accepts the team’s rapid departure. The mission proves far more dangerous and geographically inaccurate than advertised, but later testimony establishes that Orland did not know another group had already vanished; the failed tracking report reaching him was incomplete. His responsibility lies in acting on bad intelligence, not in knowingly sending Karl after a wiped-out predecessor. (Chapters 306, 311, 334)
A reflexive killing brings arrest
After the mission, General Milton protests Orland’s earlier suggestion that disputes be taken outside. Milton draws his blade, and Orland kills him so quickly that witnesses believe the response was reflexive and that Orland may not have consciously registered the act. With no High Priest capable of resurrection remaining in camp, the death becomes permanent and triggers an Inquisition investigation of the senior officers. (Chapter 334)
Orland is arrested pending trial. Unlike other officers relieved of command and demoted, he is expected to retain his grade while detained, indicating that judgment has not yet been reached. The corpus provides no trial outcome or later return to duty, so his latest status remains unresolved custody rather than conviction. (Chapter 334)
Appearance and personality
Orland wears a highly decorated General’s uniform and speaks in a straight, gravelly or raspy voice. No reliable facial or bodily description is given. He is terse and command-oriented, cutting short status games to deliver operational information, yet he also allows enough practical flexibility for the team to resupply and choose its departure time. His instantaneous lethal response to a drawn weapon shows deeply conditioned combat reflexes, though the scene does not establish intent or temperament beyond the fatal moment. (Chapters 305–306, 334)
Abilities and class
Orland is explicitly the Royal-ranked Elite among the assembled Generals, granting him both personal power and authority over lower-ranked Elites. The corpus never identifies his class, weapon, or named skills. His only direct combat feat is killing General Milton immediately after the latter draws a blade; the speed and force are sufficient for a fatal result, but the exact technique is not described. (Chapters 305, 334)
His other demonstrated capability is military command: he interprets front-wide reports, briefs teams, estimates hostile forces, and controls conflict in a command room. The corrupted or incomplete intelligence constrains that capability, and his arrest ends any shown exercise of it. No later rank progression or power state is available. (Chapters 305–306, 311, 334)
Relationships
Orland commands Karl’s team for the Frost Giant reconnaissance and later recounts their dispute to Overlord Drake. Karl initially blames the General for a fool’s mission but accepts evidence that Orland lacked the decisive missing report. Orland’s relationship with Milton ends in the reflexive killing that brings his arrest; his fellow officers become subjects of the same Inquisition inquiry. (Chapters 306, 311, 334)
