Flicker
Flicker is a young Mythic Divine Fire Dragon and Alchemist who accepts advanced training from Karl, then remains at the Nara Royal Palace as Princess Rue's friend and protector.
This article excludes Arabella's Devil Snipe named Flicker in Chapter 616. Lowercase uses of “flicker” for lights, flames, interfaces, and barriers are also ordinary descriptions rather than appearances of the dragon.
Biography
An imposed sparring partner finds a reason to stay
Cara effectively abducts Flicker from her room to give Rue a magical sparring partner of manageable size. Flicker is already Mythic-ranked and older than the newly awakened Princess, but Rue quickly declares her a best friend and announces that she will remain as an Alchemist. The arrangement initially blurs coercion and genuine interest: Flicker has not chosen the spar, yet she is startled by Rue's hidden competence and by Karl's expectation that both young women can eventually pursue Immortality together. (Chapter 1405)
The promise of rare knowledge gives Flicker agency within that arrangement. Divine Fire Dragons are born mortal despite immense potential, so rare skills can distinguish them from species born at Immortal rank once they enter the higher realm. Flicker asks to pause the spar, questions Karl's teaching process, and accepts [Runic Alchemy] through [Follow Me, Little One]. The transfer upgrades her established Alchemy into a new tier and changes the Palace visit from an inconvenient duty into a meaningful professional opportunity. (Chapter 1405)
Runic training becomes political protection for Rue
Flicker joins three other dragon Alchemists in Karl's temporary laboratory. She recognizes why his teaching skill requires physical contact, probes whether it was designed by a Spellcrafter, and begins learning how runes can intensify and prolong potion effects. Her curiosity is paired with practical enthusiasm—she arrives with a large supply of chocolate and immediately engages with the underlying syntax rather than treating transferred knowledge as mastery. The lesson gives her a craft foundation, but the corpus does not show her independently completing a runic potion before Karl leaves. (Chapter 1406)
At the Royal gathering, Flicker hovers near Rue while ministers compete for influence. She sees through their simple plots and redirects conversations until they give up, providing social defense rather than merely standing nearby as a stronger combatant. Karl ultimately considers Rue safe enough to leave because Flicker will remain even if other temporary allies abandon their promises. Her latest role therefore combines friend, alchemist, adviser, and deterrent, although no formal court title is stated. (Chapters 1414–1415)
Appearance and personality
Flicker is a diminutive young Divine Fire Dragon who takes the form of a curly black-haired girl. She is older than Rue but small enough for the System and Karl to tease her as a child, and her eyes sparkle when she anticipates new knowledge. The group wears fancy dresses during the Palace performance, but the text does not assign Flicker a specific color or style, nor does it describe her full dragon form, eyes, scales, horns, or exact height. (Chapters 1405–1406)
She is serious, inquisitive, proud, chocolate-obsessed, and politically mischievous. Flicker questions implausible claims, analyzes the targeting mechanics of Karl's skill, rolls her eyes at Green Dragon work habits, and carries emergency chocolate in her inventory. Around the Palace ministers she turns that intelligence toward protecting Rue, confusing and taunting people whose motives she recognizes. (Chapters 1405–1406 and 1414)
Abilities and class
Flicker is a Mythic-ranked Divine Fire Dragon. Her species is normally born at Overlord rank and innately understands the Fundamental Rule of Fire, making eventual Immortality a natural result of growth if nothing interrupts it. The source does not name her combat class, current skill tree, age, earlier advancement steps, or latest distance from the Immortal threshold. (Chapter 1405)
Fundamental Rule of Fire and draconic potential
Flicker's species-level understanding of the Fundamental Rule of Fire supplies guaranteed potential for Immortal advancement. This is innate comprehension rather than a skill Karl grants, and it distinguishes long-term capacity from present mastery. The corpus does not show Flicker casting a fire spell, breathing flame, entering combat, or using a named Rule technique, so no attack mechanics, range, costs, or resistances can be assigned to her. (Chapter 1405)
She can hover near Rue and is substantially stronger by rank, but the source does not clarify whether the hovering uses wings, magic, or ordinary draconic flight in humanoid form. Her latest demonstrated protective effect is deterrence and political awareness rather than an on-page battle. (Chapters 1414–1415)
Alchemy and Runic Alchemy
Flicker already possesses Alchemy as a trade skill when she meets Karl. He transfers [Runic Alchemy], adding knowledge of a runic language and a craft that embeds written effects into potions. A demonstrated lesson uses runes to more than triple a healing potion's total effect and spread the healing over a minute, reducing waste during continuing damage. The teaching requires physical contact and a compatible foundation in ordinary Alchemy, intelligence, and class. (Chapters 1405–1406)
Transferred knowledge is only the beginning of progression. Correct syntax and compound-rune links are difficult, unintended side effects remain possible, and Karl writes the first exercise rather than Flicker independently designing it. By her latest appearance she is established as Rue's Alchemist, but no finished potion, recipe catalogue, production rank, or advancement beyond the new trade tier is documented. (Chapters 1406 and 1414–1415)
Social analysis and advisory protection
Flicker can recognize transparent courtship and influence schemes around Rue, then steer conversations into unproductive directions for the schemers. The scene does not identify truth sight, mind reading, or a System social skill; her success is presented as intelligence and teasing conversation. It protects Rue from immediate manipulation but cannot be treated as immunity to sophisticated intrigue. (Chapter 1414)
Her Mythic presence also gives Rue a powerful resident ally after Karl's party departs. Karl still creates a separate Bodyguard statue, showing that Flicker's protection is valuable but not considered a complete replacement for tireless summoned guards. The statue belongs to Rue and is not one of Flicker's abilities or items. (Chapter 1415)
Relationships
- Princess Rue: Flicker's new friend, sparring partner, and royal charge. Rue adopts the relationship with overwhelming enthusiasm, while Flicker turns the imposed introduction into a chosen role as resident alchemist and protector. (Chapters 1405 and 1414–1415)
- Karl: Flicker's Runic Alchemy teacher and the person whose expectations reframe her long-term growth. She accepts his skill transfer but questions its mechanics rather than following without thought. (Chapters 1405–1406)
- Cara: The Chaos Dragon who drags Flicker into Rue's training. Cara's coercive introduction is disruptive, but it creates the friendship and apprenticeship that give Flicker a lasting Palace role. (Chapter 1405)
- The dragon Alchemists: Three fellow students who share Karl's laboratory lesson. Their presence gives Flicker peers for comparing the transfer and establishes a small craft group around Rue. (Chapters 1405–1406)
Items
Flicker has no standalone notable item in the generated item catalog. Her chocolate supply and ordinary Alchemy materials are consumable provisions, while Rue's Bodyguard statue belongs to the Princess.
