Duke Ambrose

Duke Ambrose heads the royal Research and Development department that evaluates Karl's crafting-related capabilities.

Biography

Testing an innovation he did not control

Ambrose welcomes Karl as a researcher and takes him to heavily enchanted testing rooms, presenting the facilities as his department's domain. When Karl arrives with both an unfamiliar skill and designs already ready for testing, Ambrose is frustrated at having been bypassed, but still activates the dummies and barriers needed for a controlled evaluation. (Chapters 703, 705–706)

As the tests continue, Ambrose questions some of Karl's reasoning but accepts observed results, notably recognizing that Granite's unenhanced hammer swing produces an effect comparable to a skill. The episode shows him protecting departmental authority while remaining capable of revising his assessment when measurements contradict his expectations. (Chapter 708)

Later, when hostile forces threaten to enter, Ambrose's institutional confidence collapses into fear over what will happen if the facility cannot provide what they demand. His last recorded state is therefore that of a research administrator trapped by a crisis beyond the laboratory's safeguards. (Chapter 721)

Appearance and personality

No physical description is supplied. Ambrose is proud of his facilities and title, sensitive to being excluded from research decisions, skeptical of informal explanations, and responsive to demonstrable results; under direct threat, he becomes visibly frightened. (Chapters 703, 705–708, 721)

Abilities and class

Ambrose operates the testing room's enchanted dummies and barriers and evaluates skill-like effects as head of Research and Development. These are professional and facility-based capabilities, not evidence of a personal combat class or spell. (Chapters 705, 708)

No personal System skill, rank, combat application, or power progression is established. The Royal-rank enchantment level belongs to the testing rooms, not to Ambrose himself. (Chapter 705)

Relationships

  • Karl: Ambrose tests Karl's capabilities and reacts uneasily to research arriving outside his department's process. (Chapters 703, 706, 708)
  • Granite: Ambrose evaluates Granite's hammer strike and acknowledges its skill-like result. (Chapter 708)
  • Royal Research and Development: Ambrose leads the department and closely guards its expected role in design and testing. (Chapters 703, 706)
