Granite

Granite is the Dwarven Forgemaster and production chief of the Golden Dragon Nation's secret weapons laboratory, whose mastery of melee weapons turns Karl's experimental runes into equipment suitable for Overlords.

Biography

A production master converts unstable theory into tested weapons

Granite intervenes when Karl, Fizzspark, and Duke Ambrose clash during Karl's orientation. The underground staff are tense after long isolation, but Granite distinguishes that pressure from Ambrose's abuse and accepts Karl's refusal to participate in it. He takes the new Runecrafter directly to a freshly forged blade, explains the mana-compatible alloy's softness, and establishes a disciplined test sequence: baseline skill, enhanced skill, impact testing, then production quality control. His willingness to test dangerous ideas gives Karl a practical partner, while his insistence on measurement keeps the project from becoming uncontrolled experimentation. (Chapters 704–706)

Karl's early failures destroy a blade and a protected table, yet Granite responds by identifying why the result exceeded expectations and moving to a more suitable design. He physically tests an enchanted maul, producing low Commander-rank force without a combat skill and nearly Royal output after the weapon's enhancement. The proof establishes him as both maker and baseline user. When Karl helps convert the forges to Ghostfire, Granite adapts immediately and begins producing increasingly compatible bases for class-customized weapons, reducing the time between speculative inscription and field-ready equipment. (Chapters 707–708 and 712–715)

Betrayal makes craft secrecy a matter of survival

An enemy breach traps the laboratory behind failing defenses, and the official protocol requires every prototype and record to be destroyed. Granite recognizes Ambrose's attempt to preserve the work as betrayal and kills him with a smithing hammer after the Guardian identifies his lie. He then uses [Forge Fire] to erase the traitor's office and hidden storage while the smiths melt weapons they spent years creating. The decision protects national secrets at enormous professional cost, showing that Granite places the lives and future security of the staff above even masterwork equipment. (Chapter 721)

Granite still preserves two prototypes in a hidden compartment because he judges them too valuable to surrender when concealment can satisfy the security goal. After the defenders escape, he gives Karl a recovery potion, resumes forging replacement weapons for Othello and her team, and creates artistic bracelets as gifts for the Royal Family. The survivors eventually evacuate to the Palace, but Granite keeps planning around the sealed laboratory and its intact Ghostfire forges. His latest position is displaced rather than retired: the workshop is inaccessible, yet his production knowledge and surviving team remain ready to rebuild. (Chapters 722, 726–731)

Appearance and personality

Granite is a full-blooded Dwarf about 140 centimetres tall and almost as broad, with heavily muscled arms and a thick black beard tucked into his work apron. He wears a loose shirt over a physique strong enough to strike at Commander rank without a combat skill. The corpus does not specify his eyes, age, hair beyond the beard, or off-duty clothing. (Chapters 704–705 and 708)

He is gruff, practical, competitive, artistically proud, and darkly humorous. Granite respects bold experiments, laughs at irreverent runes, and rejects the idea that the Golden Dragon Nation should lose a crafting contest to Giants. He is also exacting about skipped production steps and blunt with apprentices, but he does not want deference for its own sake. His humor disappears when betrayal threatens the laboratory, then returns as soon as survivors can begin making new work. (Chapters 704–711 and 721–729)

Abilities and class

Granite is a Commander-ranked Forgemaster and Head of Production. “Forgemaster” functions as his occupational and System-facing title, but the corpus does not provide a complete class tree, earlier class, advancement route, or later rank change. His demonstrated capabilities combine Dwarven physique, elite smithing, [Forge Fire], System-assisted finishing, and detailed weapon evaluation. (Chapters 704–715 and 721)

Forging, materials, and weapon design

Granite produces exceptional melee-weapon bases with precise geometry, high mana compatibility, and effects established during forging. He understands how alloy softness changes before imbuing, spots missing quality steps, designs gem settings around Karl's runes, and can shift from axes and mauls to shields and fine jewelry. A System skill lets him finish detailed carving, but material quality remains decisive: scarce, mana-compatible alloys cannot be spent freely, and even his best initial output is below the rank required by Overlord customers. (Chapters 704, 707, 710, 713, and 726–729)

The Ghostfire forge improves refinement, compatibility, and sometimes grants a Ghostfire effect to the highest-quality weapons. Granite adapts to it faster than the other smiths, yet the forge is an externally modified workstation created with Karl and Hawk, not an innate source of unlimited flame. Its elemental nature may also make products less suitable for ice or water enchantments, and its latest availability depends on regaining access to the sealed laboratory. (Chapters 712–715 and 731)

Physical testing, Forge Fire, and crisis utility

Granite's raw hammer swing produces a low Commander-rank impact without a combat skill, and an enhanced maul raises the result close to Royal rank. He insists on testing pure physical strength first because mana, skills, or equipment can fail. This makes him an effective proof-of-concept user, but the source does not show a named attack, barrier, or full battlefield style, and the stronger output belongs partly to Karl's test weapon rather than Granite alone. (Chapters 707–708)

[Forge Fire] can incinerate records, enchantments, and hidden storage thoroughly enough for emergency destruction. Granite also recognizes flaws and magical stress after Overlord testing, administers a mana-and-stamina potion to support Karl's regeneration, and preserves essential prototypes under his own forge. These applications show broad workshop judgment rather than healing or storage powers of his own. His latest rank remains Commander, with no evidence that handling higher-grade weapons advances him automatically. (Chapters 714, 721–722, and 726)

Relationships

  • Karl: Granite's Runecrafting collaborator and test partner. Granite supplies masterwork bases and production knowledge, while Karl adds runes and forge modifications neither could complete alone. (Chapters 704–715 and 726–731)
  • Fizzspark: His counterpart in ranged engineering and trusted companion after evacuation. They challenge unsafe assumptions, coordinate different weapon departments, and share Palace quarters without concern. (Chapters 704–711 and 729–730)
  • Duke Ambrose: Granite tolerates the research director's hostility only while it remains workplace dysfunction. Once Ambrose's betrayal threatens the staff and secrets, Granite kills him and destroys his hidden records. (Chapters 704–710 and 721)
  • Othello: An Overlord customer for whom Granite forges a customized Paladin blade and evaluates the finished shield. Her order helps restart meaningful production immediately after the laboratory disaster. (Chapters 726–727)
  • Hawk: The source of Ghostfire used to upgrade the laboratory's forges. Hawk's flame expands the refinement and effects Granite can build into later weapons. (Chapters 712–715)

Items

Granite has no standalone notable item in the generated item catalog. His smithing hammer, saved prototypes, Ghostfire forge, and commissioned weapons are tools, institutional equipment, or works transferred to customers rather than scoped personal artifacts.
