Donni

Donni is a Mackenzie sibling and defensive mage whose layered arcane barriers keep an Ascended field team alive through its first long deployment before she advances into an Elite-ranked guard of the Golden Dragon Nation.

Biography

A battlefield posting turns a specialist into the team's defensive anchor

Donni and her twin sister Danni join Bob Mackenzie and Doug Mackenzie when their established Church team is assigned to Karl's deployment. Danni handles constructs while Donni specializes in arcane barriers, and their different roles immediately reinforce one another: wood golems surround the casters, Doug strengthens the constructs, and Donni shields the whole formation before enemies arrive. She treats the introduction to Rae with humor despite Bob's fear of spiders, helping Karl's beasts enter a team whose survival depends on everyone accepting unfamiliar allies quickly. (Chapters 155–156)

Against Giants, Donni repeatedly rebuilds protection faster than heavy blows can exhaust it. She layers barriers over Danni's repairing golems, restores shields around Rae and Thor, and keeps replacing protections every few seconds when clubs break them. The work consumes enough mana to tire both twins, but it lets the melee fighters stay committed instead of retreating after every impact. Her choices make defense an active rhythm of observation and recasting rather than a single spell placed before battle. (Chapters 168–169 and 176)

Advancement carries Donni from Church trials to Capital duty

Donni enters the Church's divine trial after Karl and before Danni, then continues serving with a team whose members are all Ascended. By the time Alice temporarily fills her role, Donni has reached Commander rank, and Karl uses the comparison to recognize how much stronger a true barrier specialist's protection is than a wind mage's secondary shield. The progression validates the role she built on deployment: her value comes not from spectacular attacks, but from preserving the group's ability to keep fighting opponents whose weapons can break ordinary defenses in one blow. (Chapters 181, 185, and 190)

By the Capital battle, Donni is identified as an Elite and works regular guard shifts with Danni. She understands the politicians and power brokers well enough to distrust their public faces, yet keeps enough humor to socialize with Karl's household after the crisis. When Karl offers the twins [Epic Guard], neither can open the book because they fail its minimum requirements; she then accepts [Mental Fortitude] with the rest of the gathering. The failed book prevents an unsupported upgrade claim, while the successful transfer leaves her latest state as an active Elite Barrier Mage with one new mental skill whose individual effect is not demonstrated. (Chapters 654, 660, and 670)

Appearance and personality

Donni is a young woman with curly black hair matching Doug's and is nearly indistinguishable from her twin at a glance. She weighs under fifty kilograms and struggles to lift a roughly twenty-five-kilogram Giant sword, but the corpus does not specify her height, eyes, uniform details, or other distinguishing features. (Chapters 155 and 177)

She is amused by awkward situations, professionally alert, and candid about the social cost of becoming powerful. Donni laughs at Bob's fear, examines dangerous loot twice before trusting its inscription, and accepts that a useful weapon can still be impossible for her to carry. Later, she speaks bluntly about how Elite status changes relationships with civilians and politicians, showing that battlefield experience has made her skeptical without leaving her humorless. (Chapters 156, 168, 177, and 670)

Abilities and class

Donni is explicitly a Barrier Mage. The corpus does not show her awakening or name her original skill tree, but it tracks her from Ascended rank through Commander to Elite while preserving defense as her primary specialization. Her latest rank is stated socially rather than through a detailed System display, and no later class change is recorded. (Chapters 156, 181, 190, and 670)

Arcane barriers and layered protection

Donni places magical barriers over individuals, constructs, and entire formations. She can layer her shield with Thor's [Lightning Barrier], allowing one protection to break while the other absorbs the remaining force, and she can renew a shattered barrier in the middle of combat. This makes the spell useful for holding a front line against physically stronger Giants, but it is not invulnerable: repeated Commander-level impacts break it every few seconds and sustained recasting drains her mana. (Chapters 156, 168–169, and 176)

Her specialization is materially stronger than a generalist's equivalent spell. Alice can protect Karl's replacement team after Donni advances, but Karl judges the wind mage's shield below Donni's standard despite Alice also reaching Commander rank. The comparison supports technical mastery rather than an unlimited rank advantage; Donni still needs positioning, allied barriers, healing, and damage dealers to prevent enemies from overwhelming her recovery rate. (Chapter 190)

Construct support, inscription reading, and later skill access

Donni can apply an additional vine-whip spell to Danni's wood golems, giving the constructs an attack not included in their basic summoning spell. This is allied enhancement rather than evidence that Donni can summon golems herself. She also reads magical inscriptions on recovered weapons, correctly identifying a rechargeable [Fireball] wand and a blade that makes skills easier to activate, using a notebook and repeat checks rather than instant omniscient appraisal. (Chapters 168, 177, and 201)

Karl's attempt to teach [Epic Guard] fails because Donni cannot meet the book's requirements, possibly because it needs Royal rank; she does accept [Mental Fortitude] through his direct teaching ability. Danni reports nearly doubled mana regeneration after the same transfer, but Donni's personal increase is not measured, so that benefit cannot automatically be assigned to her. No later scene shows a new barrier, rank, or combat application. (Chapter 670)

Relationships

  • Danni: Donni's twin and complementary mage partner. Danni supplies and repairs constructs while Donni protects them, and the sisters later serve Capital guard shifts and pursue new skills together. (Chapters 155–169, 660, and 670)
  • Bob Mackenzie: The lead warrior whose fear of spiders Donni knows well enough to tease. Her barriers let him hold stronger enemies while he directs the team's close combat. (Chapters 156, 169, and 181)
  • Doug Mackenzie: Donni's brother and the team's Green Dragon cleric. His construct enhancements and healing complement her shields, creating layered protection for beasts, golems, and warriors. (Chapters 155–169 and 181)
  • Karl: A temporary teammate and later teacher. Donni protects his beasts during their first deployment, reconnects with his household in the Capital, and accepts the compatible skill he offers after a higher-grade book rejects her. (Chapters 155–181 and 660–670)
  • Thor: A frontline beast whose lightning barrier stacks with Donni's arcane shield. She continually restores his outer protection so he can absorb Giant attacks without being forced out of the fight. (Chapters 168–169 and 176–177)

Items

Donni has no standalone notable item in the generated item catalog. The recovered wand and Giant sword are team loot rather than her persistent possessions, and the [Epic Guard] book never opens for her.
